4.0 out of 5 stars A Still Hidden Side of Society, 11 Jan 2010

This review is from: Wild Heart: A Life: Natalie Clifford Barney and the Decadence of Literary Paris (Paperback)
A wonderful and well researched read full of detail about the life of a forthright uninhibited wealthy woman who thumbed her nose at genteel society at the turn of the 18th/19th century and made no secret of her attraction to women.
She seduced her way through the cultural society of Paris and bedded a string of beauties of the day from sophisticated coutesans to Duchesses.
Her 'salon' was a meeting place for the major writers, artists, musicians over which she held sway for 60 years. Quite a woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best biography I have ever read., 28 Dec 2006
I loved this book. If you are interested in the world of lesbianism and literature in the victorian Era then this book is for you! It extensively details the vivacious Natalie Barney's life with an astonishing background of research considering that Miss. Barney was born in 1877! Rodriguez manages to put all the information into a nicely flowing, easy-to-read book, and keep the book as accurate as possible by including all the sources which she has gathered information from. There are a few photographs in the book, although it could do with some more.

Although detailing many of Natalie's affairs (all with women, obviously)this book has maintained a respectful tone without descending into the arena of the "cheap thrills lesbo book".

Overall, the book was an excellent portrait of a woman so ahead of her time, yet who has sadly been forgotten.
