4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting mix of genres
The genres being the private eye thriller, the supernatural thriller, and um (just a touch of) porn and another light twist on the vampire sagas. Oh and another which I won't reveal as it would ruin the end of the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars The bones of a good story
Sadly an average book - the basic story/plot better handled would have been interesting. But, well, the hamfisted way what could have been interesting quirks - like a vampire frightened of bloodsucking by a virus/disease but forced to do so to pacify (no joke) some nympho behaviour by female witnesses - leaks away the tension. I'll pass on critiquing the plot holes - like...

The genres being the private eye thriller, the supernatural thriller, and um (just a touch of) porn and another light twist on the vampire sagas. Oh and another which I won't reveal as it would ruin the end of the book.

This time our hero is a guilt-ridden vampirised ex-soldier turned P.I. hired to investigate an outbreak of nymphomania on a secret government base. He links up with the local vampires who aren't such bad people and who generally do their best to avoid killing humans, sticking to volunteers, and blood banks or animals for their supplies, Our hero only drinks animal blood. To complicate the mix even more, the vamps are being hunted by a mysterious organisation of vamp-killers.

Add a bit upfront relatively explicit sex (it isn't really porn, I was just being playful) and you have an entertaining time passer. This first in a new series won't come within mile of any awards but it's different enough to make me want to read the rest. You might too.

This review is from: The Nymphos of Rocky Flats (Paperback)
Sadly an average book - the basic story/plot better handled would have been interesting. But, well, the hamfisted way what could have been interesting quirks - like a vampire frightened of bloodsucking by a virus/disease but forced to do so to pacify (no joke) some nympho behaviour by female witnesses - leaks away the tension. I'll pass on critiquing the plot holes - like having a vampire funeral at the place where the vampire hunters have killed him - isn't it just a bit risky for the undead to hang around at such an obvious place? And the main characters being given permission by his dead victims to munch on humans was a sadly underwritten about-face after being a vampire vegan (animal blood) throughout the book. This is no dark n deadly stud muffin - just a minor variation on the private dick novel.

This review is from: The Nymphos of Rocky Flats (Paperback)
Felix Gomez went to Iraq as a soldier. When he ends up killing an innocent family, Felix wants only to be punished. His plea is heard by one of the undead. Thus Felix becomes a vampire.
When Felix is released from the military, he becomes a private investigator. One of his old friends is now an assistant manager at a secret government facility in Rocky Flats. His name is Gilbert Odin. Gilbert hires Felix to find out what caused the outbreak of nymphomania at the facility. When Felix delivers the answers to Gilbert, he learns that they only make more questions come to light. So a second mission is needed to find out what is in a certain trailer.
Felix should know that anything is possible. After all, vampires DO exist. Why not Area 51, aliens, and all the other things people believe are fake? But while Felix is doing his investigations, he is also having to dodge vampire hunters and government agents. There is much more going on than any one person knows.
**** Author Mario Acevedo seems to know his topic very well. After all, the author used to work at the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant in Denver, Colorado. And, you guessed it, he is also a veteran of Desert Storm. This novel actually required a security declassification by the federal government before it was allowed to be published. So it is a huge understatement to say the author has researched his material. In fact, the author's expertise shows in every page of the novel. The title makes the book sound like a "free for all", instead it is a wonderful mystery with a super natural twist. It also looks to be the first of a brilliant new mystery series. Bravo, Mario Acevedo, you have a fan in me! ****

4.0 out of 5 stars great fun! with a bit of gruesome!, 14 Jun 2012

I was advised to read this author by a friend and I have to say I read it all in one day and loved it!! Such a giggle!
Yes some things did get on my pip, the constant use of certain phrases and words; but the rest was excellent, horror/comedy/thriller/espionage!
ex army turns vampire turns PI.... then the fun starts.
A whole new view of vampires and their world, shades of Buffy humour! with fairies, sprites and ET!
If you were to take out the supernatural element you would have a fairy good thriller to boot.
Will definitely be looking up more, for lighter moments of good reading.
