This review is from: Paddy Whacked: The Untold Story of the Irish American Gangster (Paperback)
A good read on an interesting topic, a topic probably underserved due to focus on Italian gangsters in popular culture. Eye-opening in terms of the intersections between civic / political life in the US and the underworld of its cities, and the ubiquitous presence of the Irish in the overlap.

Style is a mixture of a catalogue of the stories of rogue characters who come and go (usually in a hail of bullets), interspersed with some (only partly-developed) observatons on patterns / themes e.g. the influence of agrarian secret societies in Ireland on the organisaton and mindsets of the emigrants who began the Irish gangster 'tradition'.

The episodic chronological and/or city-by-city approach does not lend itself to such themes emerging and it is not easy to keep track of all the character cameos, but the pros outweigh the cons and the quality of research is excellent.

This review is from: Paddy Whacked: The Untold Story of the Irish American Gangster (Paperback)
One of the best non fiction historical accounts that i have ever read. It is incredibly well written and painstakingly put together. I have learned more from this book about the american underground than perhaps any other. The only other that comes close in being able to inform you of all the details yet at the same time not seem dry and keep you interested is Herbert Ausberys Gangs of New York. This is simply a fantastic book to anyone with an interest in the american underground and its roots into politics and the police.

This review is from: Paddy Whacked: The Untold Story of the Irish American Gangster (Paperback)
An amazing account that chronicles the rise and fall of Irish mobsters from the early 1800s through to the late 90's. A thoroughly entertaining, factual book.
