5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastically written history from an alternative perspective, 3 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Arcs over such a massive timeline, zooming in (giving detail) and out (fast-forwarding) where appropriate, thus maintaining the uniqueness of the approach, i.e. it avoids sounding like most other history (text)books.

Preference given to personal interpretations of representative individuals (would-be unknowns quoted directly), or to key historical figures, at various periods of the country's history.

A must read.

Exactly what is says, a people's history, biased, so what, after the doctored rich class favored history we have had for decades even centuries it balances the bias and more truthfully so.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterclass of Class Struggle, 2 May 2014

The author renders his subject with passion and eloquence, seldom seen in the dry text books of school and college libraries.

Read and enjoy

4.0 out of 5 stars Radical History, 3 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book gives a radical view of American history which challenges preconceptions. The author does clearly aim to give a balanced view, but does not always successfully achieve this. The quality of research and writing is excellent, but it straddles the borderline between history and polemic, sometimes uncomfortably.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something to blow your hair back!, 4 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I first heard about this book in the film 'Good Will Hunting". Its description intrigued me; so I bought it. Not your standard history of great men and great battles, but the cost to 'the little people' of history for major changes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A peoples history of the United States, 11 Oct 2013

Having spent much enjoyable time reading Morrison and Commager ( the Union view ) and Chitwood and Owsley, ( the Confederate view) my fascination with American history was undiminished. An American friend suggested this book to me and what a find it has been! It pulls no punches from Columbus on and especially with regard to the slaughter in the West Indies of the Arawak Indians by the predatory Spaniards to the equally vicious slaughter of the American Indians by the English. It proceeds to abandon the normal sweeping under the carpet of the unpleasant details which would spoil the American dream and maintains this posture to the present day. Read it !

5.0 out of 5 stars A long slog, but absolutely worth the journey., 16 Aug 2013

They should teach this in schools. It is really what happened, not what the Man wants you to think. MF
