Kathleen’s story is a brave true account of a horrific and tragic childhood endured with unbelievable strength and unconditional love. The narrative is simple yet powerfully engaging with a hint of child-like innocence to it. Although the abuse of power by religious authorities and people entrusted with the wellbeing of children are nothing new, the sheer wickedness and unfortunate turn of events surrounding Kathleen’s life are sometimes hard to comprehend. But the interplay between various emotional elements makes the book all the harder to put down; it is both tragic and inspiring at the same time. Kathleen has not only shown to the public through this gem of a book how fragile familial bond can be if not cherished but also how love and compassion can be a powerful enough reasons to continue living despite life’s hardships and seemingly cruel fate. This is a book that will put you through an emotional roller coaster ride but also one that will leave you with a strange sense of comfort that even when your life has taken an awful turn, there is light, no matter how dim, at the end of the tunnel, that will give you the strength to continue to find the way to your happy ending.

I give this book 5 stars.
Although it was harrowing to read it outlined the facts of child abuse and the fight to get these institutions closed down and bring the abusers to light.

I wish the family much luck for the future.
Truly wonderful and brave people.

What a powerful book with an exceptional story. I spent a day reading this book. I was totally engrossed. I found the author told an honest account of a traumatic childhood. It wasn't exaggerated like some of the terrible books I've read. What I absolutely loved was the bond between siblings, the fun adventures they had. I adored the scenic descriptions and in my mind it was every bit as picturesque. The neglect the children suffered saddened me very much and to be let down by adults in such terrible ways is just awful. But if you haven't read this book I recommend it so very highly. As I closed this book I sighed and thought what a journey this author put me through 5 stars all the way!!!!

LITTLE DRIFTERS, where do I start. The beginning starts with a large family who clearly love each other. Due to kathleens father's alcholism and depression, the life of this young girls family begins to shatter leading to an early start of negelect. Because of this Kathleen and her siblings are then institutionalised by a catholic run convent. During her years there Kathleen and her siblings are divided, abused (emotionally, mentally, physically and sexually). I am horrified that ALL of the abuse they endured was IGNORED and swept under the carpet. Then to be abused again in their adult lives by the redress board is unforgivable. What justice is giving all these victims gagging orders and all those who committed these awful crimes to NOT be named and to walk free. Absolutley outrageous. Kathleen you are a very brave women, congratulations on getting your story out!

This is a fantasic read, and i highly recommend it.

Kathleen's story is vividly told and all the more shocking because it is simply narrated.
it is not just the abuse she endured at the convent, it is the chaotic childhood recalled with such affection that makes one realise how truly deprived she and her family were..
This book was easy to read and hard to endure.
Well done Kathleen for having the courage to "go public" on your shocking past.

It is one of the most inspiring and beautiful reading in which in this book I found the greatness and importance of love that kept us alive each day. The book recounts the survival of a young girl who never gave up in her bittersweet life by keeping her heart and mind strong against all unforeseen obstacles and surprises. Despite all the devastations in her life she had to endure, she nevertheless kept the sweet and loving moments in her heart and move forward with faith and much positivity. Reading through the book, I loved every part of it that I would read it again and again. This book is fantastic reading and highly recommended for youths and elders alike.
