5.0 out of 5 stars Potential gold medal winner in the race for best London 2012 book released this year
What if you were to judge this book by its cover? Few could have any complaints with the shiny gold finish, smart layout or choice of cover stars. Proper coffee table stuff. BUT you could be put off by the title. "The Games", no mention of what Games, no licence to do so. No utterance of "Olympics" or "London 2012" found in the back text either and no sight of the Olympic...

3.0 out of 5 stars The Games by The Times
Relives the London 2012 olympics as reported by The times originally. Each day of the olympics gets its own section. The focus is on Team GB medallists. Plenty of daily info. about Team GB results. The photos focus on the participants - my main complaint is that the photos fail to give much of a sense of venue. Crowd / action / venue photos are relatively scarce -...

What if you were to judge this book by its cover? Few could have any complaints with the shiny gold finish, smart layout or choice of cover stars. Proper coffee table stuff. BUT you could be put off by the title. "The Games", no mention of what Games, no licence to do so. No utterance of "Olympics" or "London 2012" found in the back text either and no sight of the Olympic rings. A minor pity for the publisher, perhaps, but don't be put off as a consumer. As soon as you open it up you're faced with those five rings while 'The London 2012 Olympic Games' proudly begins the opening sentence of the inner dust jacket. Phew, that could have been awkward. From thereon in it's success all the way - in more ways than one.

The Times managed to ride the London zeitgeist like no other paper with its stunning wraparound covers for each day. 'The Games' reflects that dedication with a glorious selection of arty and iconic photographs. The previous London 2012 book I bought (and offered my opinion on) has photos that capture the moment, but these Times photographs capture the essence. Similarly, the write-ups from Times scribes including Matt Dickinson and Owen Slot are simply a class above the competition. It should be noted that they are drawn from the original Times reports. Some have been redrafted, commonly in minor ways, but if you own the original copies of The Times, there'll be little new here beyond the presentation. It also restricts itself to reports on the victories, near misses and hard-luck stories of the athletes, avoiding any of the secondary opinion pieces written in the paper over that famous fortnight. And 'The Games' does come with the subheading of 'Great Britain's Finest Sporting Hour', so if you're not part of Team GB, or of the legendary status of Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps or the American NBA all-stars basketball team, your best chance of a mention is if you got pummled by the mighty Brits. And, no, the Paralympics aren't mentioned.

Simon Barnes' new introduction is pitched perfectly and the day by day accounts tell an unforgettable illustrated story. The paper stock is of good quality, the text is clear and classy and the photographs are immaculately reproduced. If you're looking for a London 2012 book to add to someone's stocking this Christmas, or your own book shelf, this one looks to be heading for the centre of the podium. We are in for future treats if it ends up taking silver.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly written, superbly photographed, 8 Dec 2012

For me, the outstanding photographs of the games, as captured and printed by The Times every day (including the supplement "cover wraps"), were very much part of the whole experience. The best of those photographs are collected in this book, many in full-page format (although not the cover wraps - they are collected together as smaller images). They are often beautiful, artistic images, much more than just simple snapshots recording the events. The photographs are accompanied by text written and printed as the games were happening. This combination is very effective at transporting the reader back to those glorious days of the summer of 2012. The chronological format and short, newspaper-column writing also make the book very easy to dip in to. The emphasis is on the achievements of the British athletes, although other performances are not overlooked. Whilst perhaps not as comprehensive as the "official" book of the games, I've found The Times book to be more enjoyable.

I wanted a good record of the amazing 2012 Olympics. As a Times reader I was already familiar with much of the content from the excellent daily reporting and the photography is good. But there were a few niggles. It has something of the mark of a rushed job - just the daily news stitched together in a book. I would have looked for some over-arching assessments of the games, the preparations and the aftermath, written from the perspective of a few weeks later. And, it may seem a small point, but just referring to each day as 'Day 1' etc does nothing to set the momentous events in a true calendar. For example, I will always recall Super Saturday as being Saturday 4 August 2012, not simply Day 8 (or 9) if you go by the BBC DVD. In years to come I think this is important.
