3.0 out of 5 stars Reasonable cover, poor stand.
Despite the pictures it will only support the tab when lying on it's back. Standing up on a long edge and it falls backwards.

Marie Colvin was a force. Whether by concentration of mind or body - and many times both - she went where the hotel residing, press release reading media correspondents do not venture.

There is a revealing line as she takes the enforced break from work after losing her eye from grenade shrapnel wounds whilst in Sri Lanka reporting on the Tamils, although reporters had been banned by the Government from doing so - that speaks of her connection to the ordinary civilians caught up in the nightmare of warfare that flouts any hint of the Geneva convention.

She says,
"Simply: there’s no way to cover war properly without risk. Covering a war means going into places torn by chaos, destruction, death and pain, and trying to bear witness to that. Not so much as to what kind of toys are being used – I’ve never been able to figure out if that is a MiG or a Tornado shooting at me, or 105mm or 155mm artillery. I care about the experience of those most directly affected by war, those asked to fight and those who are just trying to survive." end quote.

She took the risks and paid with her life but her words are there for history to read and as the book contains her journalism over many years, you can pick any era or event and step straight into the lives of those so greatly affected by decisions made from dictators, politicians and fanatics that create the asylum seekers, that we in the western world now see, attempting to survive on our streets. If you want to know about real war experience rather than thinking it's all some kind of video game, you'll do no better than to read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Truth About War, 6 Jun 2012

(VINE VOICE)    (TOP 100 REVIEWER)
This review is from: On the Front Line: The Collected Journalism of Marie Colvin (Paperback)
Marie Colvin was killed in Syria in February this year. Her death
represents a formidable loss to the profession to which she was so
deeply committed. Ms Colvin was a fine writer but more than this we
could always rely on the incisive nature of her reportage and her
deep sense of humanism in the face of man's inhumanity to man in
the many war zones around the globe into which she stepped fearlessly
so that we might know the reality about the horrific experiences of
those poor souls (civilians and soldiers alike) in the thick of it
on the ground. She never balked at staring evil squarely in the face.

'On The Front Line' will stand as a unimpeachable epitaph to one of
the finest war correspondents of her (or frankly any) generation. The
collected pieces span a wide arc between the Iran/Iraq war in the
late eighties; through the Gulf conflict and Kosovo in the nineties;
to her coverage of the Iraq debacle in the early noughties. Her insight
into more recent Middle Eastern upheavals is equally peerless. Throughout
one is struck by her eye for detail (however painful) and a profound
desire to communicate, in lucid prose, both her observations and emotions.

The truth about war was never so-well articulated. What a great woman she was.

Essential.

Marie Colvin was an extremely brave and enthralling writer. She could never be accused of being partisan to any event and told it aas it really was.

Marie Colvin was one of those exceptional journalists and people to put her life on the line by reporting from war torn conflicts. Sadly, she paid the price with her own life. On the Front Line is a superb collection of her work. Highly recommended read. RIP Marie.

It is a great book but very intense reading. I am lifting and laying it as I think it's too much to take in all at once. What an incredible journalist Marie Colvin was. I think it is an eye opener as to what these people are risking and as it happened with Marie paying the ultimate price sometimes. Great book though. Would thoroughly recommend it.

The death of the great lady was a tragedy of 2012. Here is captured her ever modest words, focusing on the plight of those around her, never her own fearlessness. This book, her articles, are a moving account of the conflicts that have shaped our world. May she continue to inspire.
