Quiz Book Review
on 31 March 2013
This book like most quiz books of this type runs true to form. A great book for someone putting together a quiz for a pub quiz night, provided one can field some of the inaccurate answers!
I am a writer with over 20-years+ writing experience for TV quiz shows and other media and verifier for one particular quiz show and therefore comment with degree of confidence.
Whilst many authors go to great lengths to publish such books, it never ceases to amaze me how much inaccurate information one finds out there in the quiz book world. I understand books becoming dated and info being overtaken by time, particularly where superlatives are concerned. However, when one starts to analyze a book like Collins Quiz Night (Difficult)I was amazed that in the first four quizzes four wrong answers were found!
1) Dada art movement founded in 1916 in Zurich Switzerland by an Austrian from Vienna not founded in Vienna.
2) The District Line on the London Underground, serves 60 stations as to the Piccadilly Lines 53.
3) The SI unit for measuring radiation is the becquerel. The Curie or Ci although measures radiation is not a SI unit.
4) South China Sea is NOT the largest sea in the world. At 2,000,000 square miles (or 5,177,762sq kilometers) the Philippine Sea is.
I haven't verified the rest of the questions/answers yet, but I will.
On the positive side though the book has some very good material from which I can gain many thought prompts for my own writing.
