4.0 out of 5 stars Another great publication from Times, 14 Aug 2012

Looking at the Amazon website, this appears to be a smaller half price version of an earlier editionThe Times Atlas of London: The story of a great city through maps, history and culture. The historical and modern maps are excellent as is the text. I wonder if it is a replacement for, or in addition to the equally brilliant History of London by Hugh Clout, The Times History of London: An Outstanding Illustrated Survey of One of the World's Greatest Citiesalso published by Times. These two publications are very different and for anyone who likes the Atlas, it would certainly worth obtaining the History which also includes many historical maps.

It is a pity that Times have not included their brilliant 10 inch to 1 mile mapping of the City and West End of London from their 1968 Reference Atlas of Greater London as they have found room for other historical maps.

The modern maps included are brilliant, but unfortunately, cannot be fully accessed in this version of the book; I wonder if they are better portrayed in the larger, more expensive version. The Greater London maps have a massive full page overlap from east to west, much larger than the norh to south overlap, but unfortunately, this puts the map area from the edge of one plate at the very centre of the next! It is frustrating that most of the map is duplicated in the overlap, but the very area that is not duplicated, disappears into the centre binding. I recon about 2 cm of mapping is lost at the binding on each plate. It would have been better if a generous 2 cm strip margin was left down the centre of each plate, which would also have made for a better overlap with the following plate. For example, the M1 Motorway appears to disappear fron page 37 to page 36. On page 41, half of the word 'ILFORD' has disappeared into the binding. The same problem appears whenever a map plate appears in the book. Perhaps if these books were printed in this country instead of in China resulting in lost British jobs, these problems could be sorted out. Also, in this version, none of the historical maps are reproduced large enough to be able to read the print without a powerful magnifying glass.

The binding problems are the reason I have downgraded my review from 5 to 4 star, but it remains highly recommended.

The history part of the book is really fascinating, with many anecdotes and full of details. Could be much better if the content is organised by themes.

What a lovely book to read and read again. Very interesting going through London borough by borough. As we visit London a few times a year it interests me about the history and how it's changed over the years. Definately worth buying and using as reference.

Excellent, very detailed 'atlas' of London containing loads of old and new photos, historical map extracts and detailed, potted histories borough by borough. Great reference book with a wealth of info for the history-lover and geographer. We visit London several times a year and always use it beforehand and after visits.

5.0 out of 5 stars A London History, 20 Nov 2012
This review is from: The Times Atlas of London (Hardcover)
A wonderful little book. Wonderful pictures showcasing many places I had never heard of, and I thought I knew London moderately well. I could not disagree with Andrew Taylor's comments on the binding, but this is not a field guide, and Google maps can fill in any deficiency in the book's maps. I love the older maps, and I don't find legibility to be a problem, and some of the local maps. All in all, an excellent guide to London. Together with the Brewer's Guide to London Fable and Ed Glinert's London Compendium there are few details of London not covered.
