4.0 out of 5 stars Joe Sixsmith is the Miss Marple of Luton!, 17 Nov. 2000

Joe stumbles across murders like most people trip on loose paving stones. I love the way he falls accidentally over clues it would take other people months to track down. These are light hearted novels about serious issues and once you get used to the juxtaposition they are great fun to read. This one had a darker edge to it, dealing with covering up family secrets and corruption. The theme is echoed in a continuing subplot involving the corruption and racism in the police force. It is never made a major issue but it comes across as being more realistic because Joe perceives it as something commonplace and irritating that just has to be accepted and dealt with.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good early work from creator of Dalziel & Pascoe, 14 Jun. 2010

This review is from: Born Guilty (Paperback)
This is a light-touch, lightwieght (but nonetheless well-crafted) crime novel from Reginald Hill, featuring Joe Sixsmith, lathe-operator turned PI. The plot is a little convoluted and contrived but the scenes between Joe and the police, his 'tame' but scary solicitor and love interest Beryl 'Bodytone' are all beautifully observed

5.0 out of 5 stars "Very Good", 2 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The novel by Reginald Hill is great - I have really enjoyed all the Joe Sixsmith books that I've read.

However, the condition of the book was described as "Very Good". OK, it was clean, the spine was intact and all the pages were all there. But it was grey, somewhat battered looking and the pages were discoloured. I would have described its condition as "OK". For the money (£1.97 with postage included) it was quite acceptable but not of the physical quality that I expected - I was disappointed when it arrived. Thankfully, the quality of Reginald Hill's writing quickly overcame my initial misgivings.
