Beautiful book and a great price! More illustrations than you get in most books like this these days which is great to see. An easy to use book that you can look at in chronological order or by place name if you're visiting somewhere specific and want to know more. I bought this as a gift for my parents who love it as they love visiting places of interest in England. A fab price too as it was half the price of high street retailers!

Thurley has produced a well researched & elegant primer on the building of England - not Britain - & demonstrates that he is correct in his decision to limit his choice. The Kindle edition is great value.

This is an ambitious book but I'm afraid that for me it does not quite live up to its ambition. The range of scholarship is wide, but inevitably there are big gaps and too many examples that are not necessarily helpful. For example, he talks about the Brighton Pavilion without mentioning Sezincote - indeed he says that hardly any country houses were built around 1800. A lot of the illustrations are too small to be much use, and there are quite a few typos.

The book is worthy enough, but it falls between being scholarly and being a good introduction for the general reader.

Extremely interesting.Intriguing facts about many buildings which are not at all obvious when simply looking at buildings. Clearly written and extremely well illustrated.

An excellent detailed and beautifully illustrated book written by the expert Simon Thurley. Not a quick or lightweight novel this is a book to dip into with relish.
