5.0 out of 5 stars A REAL PAGE TURNING WITH AN IMPORTANT DARK UNDERBELLY
Sam Bourne's latest novel as at its heart the darkest event of the twentieth century- that of the Holocaust and its subsequent repercussions. Here fact and fiction are skillfully intertwined in a way that compels the reader to keep reading until well in the early hours. The dark subject matter, however, is what stays with the reader well after the last page has been read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not living up to the hype
After enjoying Bourne's second novel I had high hopes for this, but the plotting and research just got in the way of a proper thriller, and maybe Bourne's editor lacked the courage to slim down and tighten the narrative of this "best seller author" - a shame. The Final Reckoning really lacked the power, the tension and the pace of The Last Testament; a perfectly ok way...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Final Reckoning, 17 Aug 2009
This review is from: The Final Reckoning (Paperback)
A fantastic book, I wonder, how much is truth? I know that the Jews tried to avenge their losses during the war after the war had ended, but did thy go this far? I strongly recommend reading this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nazi's, Gold, Intregue and Dastardly deeds, 1 July 2009
This review is from: The Final Reckoning (Paperback)
There have been several of this Genre of novel released over the last few years - all will unfortunately be compared to Dan Brown's stories and in truth many of them are much better (not hard you might say) and this is one of them. He writes very well and keeps the pace of the story at a high level. The characters are likeable where required but also very human which makes a refreshing change.

i didn't have much thought for this book when i first bought it, and at first i thought my instincts were right, it seemed quite slow at first but was pleasently surprised how easily i was gripped when the tempo picked up, it was eye-opening to read some of the accurate accounts in the novel, some of which i hadn't heard of before. Couldn't recommend this book enough.

Sam Bourne is a brilliant writer and in this novel he proves this once again. He has been compared to Dan Browne and I think this does him an injustice as his books are outstanding in their own right. He has a genre all of his own. The premise of the book is an old man being shot outside the UN compound in New York. A maverick and somewhat renegade lawyer Tom Byrne is sent to talk to the dead mans daughter, Rebecca, in England, and offer her compensation. As you can well imagine this does not go to plan and he finds himself up to his neck in trouble alongside Rebecca. I cannot say too much more without giving the plot away, but I can say I enjoyed the plot from the first page to the last page. The characterisation as well as the plot is spot on and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a well written, fast paced, thriller.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, not gripping, 22 Sep 2008
This review is from: The Final Reckoning (Paperback)
It takes me a while to get involved in books but this one I stuck with. Although the idea behind it was good there is no real story, and eventually the writer goes off at a tangent and is not talking about the present story line, but another one set 50 years in the past.

He also spends far too much time describing the 'passion' between the two lead characters which seemed to come from no where but still be a dominant part of the story for some reason.

I think the writer was too involved in this story, and as such kept leading off at tangents which ultimately made me lose interest.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very insightful read, 16 April 2009
This review is from: The Final Reckoning (Paperback)
The book gets off to a slow start, similar to all the Sam Borne books. I first started getting in to it when the flashbacks started. But all in all a good book with a fantastic ending.

This is quite an amusing book, with which to pass a few hours on the beach. The story is quite absurd, (it was the poison loaves wot done it!!) and the details incredible (all the crucial leads popping up instantly on Google), not least the denouement, but it rollocks along quite well, and the actual writing if very pleasing. I am happy to believe we are all in danger of being abducted by Israeli agents any day, but poisoned loaves? In Nuremberg? Nah.
