These sudokus are cunning, and get progressively more difficult through the book. The best thing is the size of the squares, so you can write the numbers in and not get an untidy mess. There is a real satisfaction in solving these.

Be warned that these are MUCH more difficult than, for example, the Times Super Fiendish puzzles. If that's what you want then I can recommend these most highly. There are probably harder puzzles somewhere, but I haven't come across them (at least so far).

Once you have mastered X-WIngs, Swordfish, and Gordonian rectangles, even the Super Fiendish puzzles in the Times are interesting only to see if you can do them without putting in candidates, and you need something stronger.

But there are 'super-hard' Sudoku books out there that are just too hard (and I don't think Ariadne's Thread is a legitimate sudoku-solving technique, as some of them seem to need).

Wayne Gould's 'extreme Sudoku' series is pitched just right when you are one stage beyond super fiendish, and on finishing book 1, I was pleased to see that 2 and 3 were available.

I bought them both second-hand, which seems a bit of a weird thing to do with such a book :-)

But in both cases, second-hand meant untouched by human pencil, let alone pen, so they were as good as new.

I buy these for my man, we are retired, so hard to keep amused during the long cold days. Once he gets this book out the house is peaceful, I can get on with home chores and all I can hear is him trying to work these really hard puzzles out. Brilliant. Get it for your man, it will keep him quiet for hours!
