An excellent book. When translating a word, you are traditionally offered a list of potential translations without any context, whereas this book gives you examples and context for each option. Invaluable reference if you want to select the correct word/phrase to translate as opposed to making inspired guesses. Well worth the investment.

This is the third German dictionary that I have bought. Each edition becomes more comprehensive. This time the new font and blue and black entries make referencing much clearer. As language evolves, it is good to know that Collins keeps moving with technology and is keeping pace with our ever-changing languages.

This latest Collins German Dictionary simply continues my excellent experience of the large Collins Dictionaries. I own these Dictionaries in French, Spanish, German and Italian and I regularly update them as new editions come out.
My minor niggle this time is that the English is placed first not the German when I am accustomed to the other way round. I have tested the dictionary for new words not present in the previous edition and found it not wanting. So keep up the good work Collins.
For a newbie, I ought to explain that the merit of these dictionaries is the exhaustive presentation of words in context with very many examples of usage and in a consistent manner.Collins German Dictionary: Complete & Unabridged in Colour

I'm an A-Level German student intending to continue the language at university and this dictionary has really been essential for me this year. Not only does it have the vast majority of words that one would expect to come up against, there are also useful phrases for all sorts of situations in the middle, as well as information boxes about aspects of German life (for example, the Abitur). The one minor qualm I would have is that the English-German section comes first, which can be a little confusing if you're used to it the other way around.

I've been trying to learn German for some time and at last thanks to a brilliant teacher I can read and understand the written word. At a recent lesson we were discussing how German and English express themselves with differing use of words e.g. we use "get" and "have" alot when we can mean a variety of things. Germans however tend to have verbs take express the whole sentiment. This dictionary is so comprehensive that I can easily find the correct words when I am translating to understand why the German has used a particular verb for which I currently have only one meaning. It's a book to dip into and read and you cannot fail to improve language skills.

This I bought for my daughter who has begun studying A-level German.
The dictionary is excellent and provides adequate support for any person wanting to study German up to and probably beyond A-level standard.
It is easy to use and the useful phrases section is very good, saves having to compile them from separate words.
A good purchase for any student.

I am most pleased with this dictionary. It certainly is most complete, containing words expressions and phrases which I had not found in other German dictionaries. The quality of the publication is excellent from pages to cover . Very well worth the price. Because of it's size it is weighty, so it's one for the shelf , and not for carrying around .

Equipped with this and Hammer's Guide to German Grammar and Usage, I feel able to deal with just about any language problem that arises. Immensely grateful for the huge amount of scholarship and sheer hard work that went into the various editions. How lucky we are now compared with the days when I was a student.

Each translation is set out clearly and with translations for many different meanings. This allows for easy, accurate translation, along with extra useful phrases that would otherwise be difficult or unusual to translate meaningfully. With each section clear and detailed, switching between the languages is a breeze.
