5.0 out of 5 stars An essential reference book
This guide is of immense depth and a very good value. A beginner will benefit from the 22 pages long Introduction explaining all the main astronomy terms. 18 detailed maps of the sky for both Northern and Southern latitudes are very helpful, too.

Articles on every constellation give essential information for both beginners and advanced astronomers. The articles...

5.0 out of 5 stars You don't want to get your large star chart wet, do you?, 31 Oct 2011

Or dog-eared, or muddy, or lost. Easily fitting in the pocket this is a very practical little book that describes the sky, constellation by constellation (in alphabetical order - more helpful than the books that start with Ursa Minor and spiral down the globe to Octans). Stars are shown to mag 6 - less than the Cambridge Star Atlas at mag 6.5 - and the charts are not as attractive as that book (although also designed by Wil Tirion). However, this is far outweighed in the field by portability etc. Bright stars, doubles, nebulae are also described for each constellation.

The price is so reasonable that it would be daft not to buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Size is important!, 22 July 2014

The Gem series never disappoint, for quick easy reference they can't be beaten. Sometimes a little more narrative would be good, but then the book wouldn't be so small. You can't have everything!
