I am a huge fan of Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci series and thoroughly enjoyed this book - 'Stealer of Souls' is particularly brilliant. However I do think you'll appreciate the stories more if you are familiar with the characters. Overall I give this 4 rather than 5 stars because I didn't enjoy 'The Sage of Theare' quite so much, although readers who also like DWJ's slightly darker style of writing (I'm thinking here of 'The 8 Days of Luke' and 'Fire and Hemlock') will probably disagree with me. Highly recommended.

I bought this book shortly after reading the Christomanci series, as i was really wrapped up in the story. I found the short stories amusing, witty and of course they all starred the tall dashing Christomanci! This combination was enough to keep me glued to my chair, and anxiously turning the pages! Although i really enjoyed this book ( i am a great fantasy lover) if you haven't read the other books in the series you definatley will not find it easy to understand the plot, this is why i have only given it 4 stars. If you do purchase this book then, HAPPY READING! and if you don't.... well, your missing out!

As a long-term DWJ fan I was delighted to see a new Chrestomanci book, but a little sorry that it is a collection of short stories, two of which I already own. Even so, "Stealer of Souls" is worth the money in itself. Two characters from existing Chrestomanci books, Cat and Tonino fight an evil wizard who wants to become a ten-souled magician, thus making himself even more powerful than Chrestomanci himself. Typically, DWJ doesn't assume they would be friends on sight and, indeed, makes the tension Cat feels an essential part of the plot, and of the moral message. Subtly handled work, funny and exciting by turns. The other stories are also most enjoyable. Not quite vintage Wynne Jones, perhaps, but it goes some way to assuage the thirst for more on Chrestomanci - and it's great to see so many more of her books reissued at the same time. Harry Potter, watch out!

slightly disappointing as most short stories are, there is not much to get your teeth into as the stories end just as they get going. Having said that if you like the Chrestomanci series then buy this just to find out more about some of the lesser characters. Don't expect earth shattering plots!

The Chrestomanci books are a great series of books that have yet to reach the big screen. Still an excellent read for all ages because they are so well done.

The only author I have come across with the capacity to addict young readers to reading overnight!
My 13 year old niece, after I had handed a chrestomanci book to her when she was bored, said " why did no one tell me about this writer before? Think of all the books I could have read years ago!"
