This review is from: The Rabbit's Wedding (Hardcover)
This is one of the most precious gems of all the children’s books. I grew up with this book. This still is my most favourite book, even now at this age (celebrating 50th birthday in three years). With the subtle use of colours, delicate lines, and tender and gentle story development, it feels like we can stroke the rabbits’ fur, and smell the grass in the breeze, for real. I owe Mr Garth Williams for the artistic sensibility – as well as a soft spot for animals – to be germinated and nurtured in me at a very early stage of my life, and believe every child should have this book.

About the racism claim:
It is often said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Reversely, ugliness is in the brain of the criticiser. People who see racism in this book must have a degree of racism in them to start with. Because I certainly did not see it when I was 3, and still do not see it now, nearly half a century later.
The majority, who would publicly disapprove of racial hygiene policies in history, would also disapprove of an interracial marriage in their own families? Hypocrites!! What is wrong with the interracial marriage, anyway? Genetically, lack of diversity increases the chance of parents passing congenital health problems to their offspring.
It is impossible to breed a thorough-bled human, anyway. A few years ago, some people, who believed the pureness of their respective white bloodlines, participated in a research for a UK TV programme, all but one found that their respective ancestors had collected different genes from all over the world, from Africa to Middle East to even Far East.
It is high time those racists had woken up. The act of associating this book with racism is the very act of racism. Such hatred is one of the ugliest concepts in humans, and only humans act on it.
