5.0 out of 5 stars the british isles
This author certainly has a knack of writing history- this book follows volumes on Hong Kong and South Africa.
In 12 chapters the book covers our history from 54BC- 2001.Each component country is given a fair share of history recording the interaction of the 4 and the effects of internal and external events.
The illustrations are good but not adequately...

2.0 out of 5 stars Stilted synopsis of the history of the Atlantic Archipelago
This is the first book I have read by Frank Welsh and I am unlikely to read any more. A sweeping panorama of the history of the relations between the constituent parts of the United Kingdom, 'Four Nations' starts promisingly with an entertaining look at the ethnic complexity of British origins. Welsh appears to have rapidly lost interest in his subject, however, and the...

This is the first book I have read by Frank Welsh and I am unlikely to read any more. A sweeping panorama of the history of the relations between the constituent parts of the United Kingdom, 'Four Nations' starts promisingly with an entertaining look at the ethnic complexity of British origins. Welsh appears to have rapidly lost interest in his subject, however, and the bulk of the novel is nothing more than a synopsis of events, dates, and people, drawing few conclusions and even less conjecture - this book is not intellectually stimulating and is consequently an onerous read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly written, 23 May 2007
This review is from: The Four Nations: A History of the United Kingdom (Paperback)
The Four Nations: A History of the United Kingdom is an infrormative and very enjoyable look at the history of the United Kingdom and Ireland. It deals right up to the modern day and the potential problems of devolution. Some people may regard it as England-centric or that it deals too much with the problems of Ireland but as long as you take it as it is it is a very good read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Four Nations, 19 Aug 2011
This review is from: The Four Nations (Paperback)
Aiming to provide a review of England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, it does concentrate on England and England's relationships with the other three. Perhaps this is inevitable since England dwarfs the other three by population and commerce, but it would have been good to see more on the other areas. There are some annoying mistakes (2002 edition) - such as referring to the Royal Ulster Constabulary in 1920 - which makes me wonder if I have read others without realising it.
Still, very readable and good overview of the whole history of these two islands.
