I'll be honest here, Brian Lowry's books were mediocre to the point of frustrating, and this is a definite step up from the rather pathetic norm.
Season 4 is in my opinion, the darkest and most darkly terrifying of any series, and so even if you can't get your hands on a box-set (They're very rare now) you can still read about some of the superb stand-alones in Season 4.
Andy Meisler dedicates 10 pages to each episode, with the majority of that being the summary, but a couple of pages of 'back story', fascinating things about the making of each episodes (Brian Lowry, your time is up! What were you thinking?! TWO pages an episode?!!! That's criminal!!!!)
Anyone who has read my fanatical reviews of box-sets on Amazon.co.uk will know that I'm obsessed, but this was the thing that got me really obsessed. Now I own every boxset.
You can too. Buy it, and read it for many nights to come...

This latest official guide to one of the top shows on television outdistances the previous books by Brian Lowry because of its in-depth synopsis of each episode of the fourth season....A perfect companion piece to the previous books, the only drawback is the black and white pictures...but the poster included with the book shows a nice history of the first four seasons of the show... This is a good resource for casual fans of the show who may have missed an episode along the way and the rabid fans who watch the show religiously.. Highly recommended for casual and rabid X-Philes alike.

This is a slightly new format for these Official Guides, but it works as well as the previous ones. The plot summary sections have been considerably bulked out, making them that much clearer. The 'backstory' notes are also a little longer. However, some of the 'around information' about the making of and cast/crew work not directly connected to one episode have been lost. All in all, it seems a fair trade-off. In essence, if you're looking for a guide to the episodes, and a bit of backstory, you couldn't do much better than this.
