Product Description

‘How to Manage Problem Behaviour in Children through the HET Journey’ is based on HET: Holistic Educational Therapy. This is an award winning and highly commended natural approach to assisting young people, who may have difficulty experiencing success within the educational system. This may be due to any number of reasons, for example, difficulty focusing or in paying attention over a period of time. The HET approach may be used effectively with all types of behavioural issues.
The guide is an introduction for anyone, parent or professional, who wishes to support children and young people and to bridge home / school partnerships, in addressing some of the issues around managing undesirable behaviour.
The book contains helpful and practical free materials and resources with links to a fully interactive companion website.

Written by Linda Porter B.A.,Cert.Ed.MIPTI,BFRP,MACTA,Dip.Phy.FMHET, a teacher, therapist, lecturer, author and the pioneer of HET. (Holistic Educational Therapy).
Linda is currently working as an in-house consultant establishing HET for an ‘Alternative Education’ provider supporting some of the most extreme and behaviourally challenged young people in the UK. HET has been commended by OFSTED, the UK's school standards authority.
Holistic Educational Therapy – is a very powerful programme! It uses a special combination of natural remedies, alternative therapies and behavioural techniques alongside behavioural psychology and individualised learning programmes aimed at supporting children with emotional and behavioural challenges and their families and professionals.

Each HET programme is a tailor made approach to suit each individual child. Each individual programme is made up of a series of ‘Stepping Stones’, that take us to where we want to be.
Each approach used within the HET programme is so safe and so simple – the worst thing it can do is not work… It has been proven that in more than 85% of cases it does! What have you got to lose?

TESTIMONIALS ON HET:
UK Government department:
Taken from OFSTED report from Kingston Pupil Referral Unit Wolverhampton 2005
“They (…pupils) talk appreciatively about the positive relationships that they have with staff and the focused individual help that they receive through the impressive holistic educational therapy programme. This programme also contributes significantly to their health and emotional well-being. A thoughtfully structured rewards system, combined with consistently applied rules, motivates pupils to learn how to manage themselves and adopt safe practices. As a result, behaviour is good.”

The following is taken from an OFSTED (The official body for inspecting schools in the UK) report from Norton College Worcester – a school for young people with challenging behaviour and complex needs – March 2012:

“There are many visitors to the college and off-site visits to enrich the curriculum. Weekly visits to a local animal rescue centre are eagerly anticipated and students are encouraged to take responsibility for walking the dogs and looking after the animals as part of a structured Holistic Education Therapy programme.”
“Parents and carers report that they have observed positive changes in the behaviour and attitudes of their children since attending the college. One parent typically commented, ‘My child was out of school for a long time and the college has been fantastic in getting him to learn again.’ All students have personal targets and these are monitored daily to ensure that any issues that arise are quickly resolved.
“ Students and their families receive good advice and support regarding health and diet, emotional management, behaviour and relaxation techniques from the Holistic Education Therapy department within the college.”

HET was a 2009 London Award Winner for the “Rediscover Your Heart Award for the Inspiration and Empowerment of Young People.”

More About the Author

With a national reputation for thinking outside the box, Lin Porter is a woman on a mission!

Surviving her own painful experiences of childhood issues, she has made it a life-long quest to understand the reasons behind people not reaching their full potential and what creates those blocks along the way. Combining 32 years of working in every level and sector of Education with many years of research and understanding into what can be done about it, Lin shares a proven solution for successfully working with some of today's most challenging young people with severe emotional and behavioural problems.

Lin's career spans working as a biochemist, teacher, lecturer, national advisor (to some of the UK's biggest educational projects), author, multi disciplinary Complementary Therapist, Educational Consultant and radio presenter. She founded the International HET: Holistic Educational Therapy Programme in 1999. This pioneering programme embraced a powerful combination of leading edge science into the way we learn and develop, with a specific sequence of holistic therapeutic approaches, psychology of behaviour management and accredited learning programmes, all of which focus upon and celebrate the individual uniqueness of every child.

The successes achieved with the HET programme show the importance of fitting systems to children not forcing children into systems. This work has resulted in many accolades including commendations from OFSTED (The agency upholding standards in schools and colleges in the UK), a national 'Rediscover Your Heart Award' for the empowerment and inspiration of young people. The HET programme demonstrates the best approaches to learning and led to an invitation to become a NSPCC "Woman of Influence". One of the prestigious aspects of the HET programme is the inherent materials which monitor progress along the way and profile the individual, to create a unique 'tool box for life' approach.

Lin Porter currently supports many schools and educational communities and works as works as an alternative education provider supporting some of the most challenging young people in the UK. This is alongside teaching an international ELearning programme for training professionals and supporting families, children and young people worldwide.

HET is now available for parents, carers and professionals as a self help programme and an accredited professional training programme. An interactive companion website supports her books where readers can access personalised help and a wealth of individualised support materials and accredited projects.

Supporting Children with Difficult Behaviour - The HET Programme

Difficulties in maintaining attention and focus, restless, defiant, uncooperative unresponsive, aggressive, looking to poor role models...

All kids can be difficult, frustrating - even challenging - to be around at times. Some seem to be constantly struggling to thrive emotionally, educationally or socially. But it is often not clear to the adults in their lives how best to help and support them to move beyond their challenging behaviour.

It can be crucial to have guidance on the most effective ways of supporting these children- especially when the ways that you have tried don't seem to be working.

Linda Porter, whose background includes educationalist and psychologist, has written an e-book which presents a truly holistic behavioural management programme based on her pioneering work with HET (Holistic Educational Therapy) with very hard-to-reach children, including those with ADHD and autism.

It is refreshing that her book covers possible physical causes of poor attention and behaviour, including diet, exercise, additives, with practical suggestions for how to manage these so that the child's brain can settle into a resourceful learning state. I particularly liked the notion of a Nature Deficit Disorder, with its implications of prescribing some regular time spent in nature to provide more balanced (instead of overstimulated) functioning.

Lin also addresses the notion of historical emotional knots, formed as a way of coping with challenging emotional experiences, that can prevent children from being able to respond authentically to the situations they encounter in the present. Again, the book offers a practical and achievable path for unravelling these knots.
