4.0 out of 5 stars Finally...the original series released in the UK, 6 Dec 2008

(REAL NAME)
In a world of magic and monsters, Lina Inverse is a young sorceress who makes a living stealing riches from bad guys and keeping it for herself. However, when she steals a powerful artifact from a bandit gang known as the Dragon Fangs, she gets more than she bargained for. Before she knows it she is being chased everywhere by thieves and bandits alike but along the way she meets the friendly swordman Gourry who is high on looks but not on brains. Together this mis-matched duo must discover why everone is so interested in this powerful artifact and they must stop it from falling into the wrong hands.

Slayers is a series that was created back in 1995 which has a formidible cult following. The plot may be a bit simplistic, but it is the characters and entertaining stortelling pace that makes slayers a winner. Each episode runs for a about 22 -25 minutes and contains a perfect blend of action, intrigue, suspense, evil laughter and great comedy. And it is the way that the series utilises these elements in such an effortless and likeable way that has made slayers such a popular series over time. When slayers originally came out, it didn't take viewers long to warm to the characters. So fans, prepare to relive the good ol' days! These first 6 episodes are a great introduction to the story and cast of the series and after the sixth episode ends you will be left wanting more. Each episode ends on somewhat of a cliffhanger, so watching Slayers not only becomes enjoyable but also downright addictive.

The only thing that may put off newcomers is the animation which looks a little dated, and at some points this has an effect on the fight scenes. As there is no CGI or special effects used in this series most of the fight sequences end up looking quite boring with the old fashioned flashing backrounds and still shots. But it doesn't really affect the overall enjoyment of the series, just prepare to familiarise yourself with an older style of anime. Slayers really is a trip down memory lane for long time anime fans.

Lina Inverse is a great protagonist for the series as she creates some excellent comic moments and when it comes down to it, she can kick some serious butt. The same goes for her trusty sidekick Gourry who is often seen having swordfights with the enemy, but when he's not in combat you will notice that he is as dull as dishwater. The only thing that surpasses his stupidness is his enormous apetite. When you put Lina and Gourry together, hilarity will ensue as you will often see them bickering and getting into silly arguments or you will see Lina getting frustrated at Gourry's stupidness and some of the silly one liners he comes up with. As these 6 episodes progress it is very easy to grow to like these characters as well as a few others that are introduced. These early episodes maintain an air of intrigue as it is initially unclear which ones are on our heroes sides and which ones are out for their own dastardly deeds.

This DVD contains the first 6 episodes of the classic first series. These are
ANGRY? Lina's furious dragon slave!
BAD! Mummy men aren't my type!
CRASH! Red and white and suspicious all over!
DASH! Run for it! My magic doesn't work?
ESCAPE! Noonsa, the flaming fish man
FOCUS! Rezo's the real enemy?!

The only thing that gets on my nerves is that Slayers is that each disc is being released separately in the UK, whereas in America they brought them out in complete series boxsets. One American series boxset works out cheaper than buying 2 of the single UK DVDs...surprise surprise the UK is getting ripped off again with anime distribution. Series 1 is going to be 4 DVDs long. They are going to release one every month until the next series begins release in May 09. I'd recommend Slayers to anyone looking for an enjoyable and easy to watch series. Slayers truly excels in not taking itself too seriously. So one minute you could be gripped on a particular battles that the heroes are involved in and the next you will be laughing your head off at the series silly and likeable sense of humour. Slayers is truly good stuff...more please! ^^
