DVD Description
The damned are not content to burn in hell any longer. There is one man they must destroy before they can be free. Father Jacob is drawn into a terrifying struggle for his faith and his life. Witnessing startling acts of supernatural possession, demonic attacks, and satanic births. Exorcism is his only weapon but it may not be enough. God doesn’t always answer our prayers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Apparitions, 1 Dec 2008
By Ms. A. M. Phillips "boglethedarkangel" (Cambridge, UK) - See all my reviews

Seriously the best tv I've seen in a l-o-n-g time. Speaking as an agnostic, I find intelligent and in-depth religious dramas fascinating and thought-provoking. This ticks all the boxes and the acting is superb. Effects are good, but not recommended for anyone of a nervous disposition - the horror can be very gory, even when only 'implied' (and off-screen).
Bloody marvellous stuff - It's about time the BBC put out more quality drama like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Controversial? See for Yourself and then Decide ..., 20 Nov 2008
Joe Ahearne and Nick Collins work is ingenious. I understand that it was Martin Shaw who first thought of the idea of playing this role for television. Shaw is superb in the role - one of his very best roles ever.

It is however, causing great controversy: Apparitions being likened to Jerry Springer's "Musical". See the discussions in the Daily Telegraph for more views. I cannot see the comparison. Jerry Springer's musical in my opinion offends just about everyone - not just Christians - those sort of "reality" shows have that tendency.

Apparitions is thought-provoking and philosophical in its approach. It is also sensationalist - well it is a television programme! So far (by episode two) I have not found it religiously offensive. Far more terrible was the item about the hellish life of the people in the Congo currently - which appeared on the evening news before the programme was aired tonight - that is real Hell and should offend us all. Evil exists as does good and that is what Apparitions is exploring. I find it similarly challenging in content as are some of the preoccupations of Graham Greene.

We can switch off the television but not the terrible things in real life.

Watch Apparitions for yourself - adults only - and not those of a squeamish disposition.

5.0 out of 5 stars insightful, 13 Dec 2008
As someone who has studied this subject from an ISLAMIC POINT OF VIEW, I found this program surprisingly accurate SOMETIMES, according to what some Muslim "Exorcists" have encountered, though there are differences in theological points of view of what one is dealing with and how to deal with it. Beautifully filmed (the seminary is actually now the British Muslim Heritage centre in Manchester, and I happened to visit it one day while they were filming) well acted, MARTIN SHAW IS BRILLIANT IN THIS. So far this has been great. My only quibble with it is the last episode although well written could have shown more accurately how Muslim 'exorcists' deal with this issue. Very wishy washy in that respect, The 'Imam' did nothing right in dealing with the problem and some of the things he said were incorrect according to Muslim theology. I thought though that it was good to show the respect between the Christian and Muslim men, and this is needed more to bring our communities together.
It is also good that a well made programme like this has come out amidst the utter tripe and dangerous nonsense programmes that glorify the occult such as The Charmed et al. This definately doesn't so far. I don't believe anyone should be offended with this from a religious point of view, if anything, some of the lines can be taken to be quite inspiring for people of all faiths, and particularly scenes showing Father Jacob's unswerving faith were quite moving. Although I don't know what the next episodes are going to be like, so far so good. (Episodes 1,2 and 5 the best so far).
