Synopsis
We Can Be Heroes is the predecessor to Chris Lilley's hilarious mockumentary creation Summer Heights High. Once again Lilley stars as the five main characters, all nominees for the Australian Of The Year award, in a mockumentary format which flits between nominees as they await the ceremony. Daniel Sims is a 17-year old aspiring beat-boxing farmer who is about to undergo pioneering surgery to donate an ear-drum to his deaf twin brother Nathan... much to Nathan's disinterest. Phil Olivetti is an ex-police officer whose accidental bravery in a fly-away bouncy castle incident and subsequent fleeting fame, has given him delusions of grandeur (not helped by his 'impressive' hand-span). Middle-aged housewife Pat Mullins has found a novel way of overcoming her physical disability (she has one leg shorter than the other), 'rolling'. Imbued with a new purpose and support from her loving husband Terry, Pat plans to roll all the way from Perth to Uluru. Chinese physics student Ricky Wong has been nominated for his work in solar energy, although it soon becomes clear that his heart really lies in performing arts - in particular to his Chinese Theatre Group's production of 'Indigeridoo' a musical about Aborigine history. Fans of Summer Heights High will recognise Ja'mie King, a self-promoting private school girl. Nominated for her contribution to 'Global Vision', Ja'mie sponsors 85 Sudanese children (depending on how often they write to thank her) and takes part in a weekly '40 Hour Famine' for charity and to stay 'hot'.

What makes We Can Be Heroes stand out from the comedy crowd is Lilley's flawless talent for character-acting and mimicry. With relatively minimal costume/make-up, the show doesn't go to great lengths to disguise the fact that a grown man is playing a schoolgirl therefore each characters' believability is a marvel in itself. Subtle, innovative, surprisingly poignant and downright hilarious, it's no wonder that the show's cult following is steadily growing.

Totally agree with the other reviewer. This show is incredible, on par if not better than Summer Heights, which is quite some feat.... The 5 characters are so carefully studied and you do forget they are all played by the same person. Lilley makes a very convincing woman too! As you follow each episode you get to find out more intricate details about each character and they are acted out superbly. Sure they are all far fetched charicatures yet they remain somehow believable.
Chris Lilley is one of the most talented actors/writers/composers (see the DVD extras) on the planet in my opinion. There is humour a plenty, but it also knows when to touch a nerve and the humour never gets too silly and there are moments of poignancy which I feel only the best of comedy writers and actors can pull off.

Buy this and enjoy, I know I did....

After watching the outstanding Summer Heights High, I was keen to find out more of Chris Lilley's work. We Can Be Heroes was made before and it is easy to see the similarities between the two. Both are filmed in a spoof ducumentary style and it is easy to get drawn into the odd characters. Chris has a knack of making them believable despite the fact that you are highly unlikely to meet anyone like them. They are also so individual that you can easily forget that Chris plays them all.
You get to know each one and join their journey.
The premise is that each of the 5 characters, all played by Chris, are in the running for the Australian of the year award. You follow their story and their achievements which lead them toward the awards ceremony.
The character depictions are fantastically observed and very sharp. You can get a sense from the characters of how some have developed into those in Summer Heights High. Ja'mie is in both series and it is clear to see why. She is such a "Biatch".
There are many moments that make you cringe at their behaviour which adds to the complexity of the humour. The style is ,dare I say it, like "The Office".
You get a real empathy and emotion for the characters.
Chris has a unique style and has made an outstanding series.
I will be following his career very closely . He will surely hit the big time.
I would strongly urge the world to take note and check this out. You won't be disappointed. The guy is a genius and I am hard to please so that is indeed strong praise.

If you like Chris Lilly (summer heights high) you are going to love this too. If you haven't heard of Chris Lilly before then the humour is similar to the style of Ricky Gervais (the office) or Borat! Outrageously funny and you get to love / hate the characters as you follow them through the audition process of Autralian of the Year. Chris Lilly is able to portrait the characters superbly and you can see people you know in each of them (teenage sons, spoilt rich diva teenage daughter, middle aged disabled lady, chinese genious interested in musical theatre, and ex police officer with a huge ego and very annoying personality!).
This DVD came before Summer Heights High, if I were you I would buy both (I did!).
