DVD Description

Action superstar Dolph Lundgren (Missionary Man) propels this hard-hitting adventure as a guide hired to lead a band of treasure hunters to locate a priceless Buddhist artefact. Xander Ronson (Lundgren), an ex-Special Forces officer, agrees to lead an obsessed fortune hunter and his men on a dangerous quest for a legendary relic, the Tangka Tapestry. But great dangers await from a gang of ruthless Russian mercenaries bent on stealing the fabled treasure and also from a deadly curse said to protect the incredibly valuable relic from tomb raiders.

Synopsis

Tibetan treasures should be left alone, especially by outsiders. But if the treasure also has a curse on it, has attracted the Russian mob, and is almost guaranteed to get anyone killed who dares to get near it, then it's an even clearer choice. But for one soldier of fortune, who owes a mint to a Mongolian crime syndicate, the odds don't seem so bad--that is, until the bullets start flying. Legendary action-star Dolph Lundgren fills his enemies with lead in this tomb-raiding adventure loaded with martial arts, gun-play, and bad guys who are just asking for an ugly death.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Wild Planet" forgotten documentary, 26 Aug 2009
It actually proved much better than initially expected. I had tons of fun with that movie. In spite of it having been hammered together - using Russian expression - "on your knee" and obviously with a kind of a budget that wouldn't have fed a white circus poodle for a month, or may be due to precisely those factors.

The camera shakes and wobbles like in the latest arthouse masterpieces... The landscapes are all the same all the time, high planes desert. Boring. The costumes are very much your everyday cheap garb. The plot is so universally eternal - looking for a dangerous treasure - that it is in equal parts negligible and believable. The crowd of unremarcable faces all around the hero is precisely what you would see on any street in a small Mongolian or Khazakh town (been there, seen them) because the crowd plays itself.

Lundgren is great - looks and acts 100% a tough men slowly going down, tired but not enough tired to simply accept defeat. Somebody still kicking. He is aging well - finally lost his "Young Viking god" golden looks and one can finally see the face of the man behind all that model facade he used to have. Much better. Shooting actually looks like real shooting and men killed do not drop in artful poses. Thank God, no one flies around picturesques bamboos or spills impressionistic blood on autumn leaves...

The whole looks gritty, grey, dusty and unexpectedly realistic. The most wildly unbelievable thing about that movie was trying to believe that an ancient tomb with a treasure - and not a very well concealed one - could stay intact in inner Mongolia for couple of centuries. THAT I simply refuse to believe!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good action film, 2 Oct 2009
By Stuart (Ireland) - See all my reviews
While I dont feel let down by this film I have to say its wasnt something I particularly cared to see again soon. This could be because of wanting to see films with more emotional impact in the lead character. Ive seen The Defender, missionary man and now this and they are decent films but they lack something for people who are wanting something more than a laid back action hero. The sound effects were very good in diamond dogs and sounded like the real thing firing, unlike in some films, were the sound is changed and not the real gun or just a very dull sound. The stunts and moves were impressive in the film and the fights but I find in Van Damnes films lately thers more feeling to the lead character or maybe turmoil in the lead character unlike in Dolphs latest films. Watch In-Hell,Until Death or even Wake of Death possibly to see how its more personel, which I think makes the viewer want to know the outcome of the character more unlike a more robotic character. Diamond Dogs is a very decent action film but not amazing at all and I hope Dolph can be in something with more than just action everytime. Interestingly Universal Soldier with both van damne and him had just that solid action but meaningful story also. Who knows what will come out next year.
