4.0 out of 5 stars At last, 4 Nov 2008

Another great series. The feature through the episodes is Charley Farley and Piggy Malone in the Yokel Murders aka "Done to Death".

Each episode contains a party sketch, the yokels, Barker word play sketch Corbett's monologue, a performance filler from singers, and the wonderful musical sketches. This season contains the wonderful come dancing skit.

I look forward to getting the next releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars "There'd be no sleep for anyone that night!", 10 Jul 2007
By D.Cameron (London) - See all my reviews
With the first series of 'The Two Ronnies' proving an unqualified success, the cast and production team forged ahead with great confidence.

There were a few minor changes to the format. One of the more welcome ones was the dumping of inane novelty acts such as Alfredo. Out went shrieking Tina Charles, in came the relaxed Alan Price and Georgie Fame. A succession of girl singers, including Lynsey de Paul, took up the second musical spot. Eventually, these would be pared down to one.

Bumbling private eyes 'Piggy Malone' and 'Charley Farley' made their debut in 'Done To Death', an Agatha Christie spoof in which they investigated mysterious murders at Brimstone Grange. The lovely Sue Lloyd ( of 'The Baron' fame ) guest-starred as the vampish 'Blanche'. Piggy and Charley proved so popular they returned time and time again in the show. 'Tiswas' fans should note that Sally 'The Fabulous Miss' James is seen briefly in the first episode as Piggy and Charley's knickerless secretary.

The first show closed with an uproarious parody of Ralph Reeder's 'The Gang Show'. For donkey's years a regular fixture of B.B.C. Christmas schedules, it had boy scouts singing, dancing, and performing sketches with a moral message tagged on at the end. This teeth-rottingly sickly entertainment was begging to be sent up by messrs. Barker and Corbett. The latter's bashful scout introduced the acts through a nervous stammer, before appearing in drag as 'Mrs.Golightly'. Barker's scoutmaster cautioned a boy found in possession of a stolen chocolate biscuit, leading to a monologue entitled 'Be A Chap With A Purpose', the lyrics of which must have sent Mrs.Whitehouse into a dead faint.

'Tooting Carmen' was a Cockney version of the famous Bizet opera. Another show closed with Barker and Corbett sending up Richard Burton and Elisabeth Taylor.

David ( 'A Bit Of A Do' ) Nobbs contributed a fine sketch to the first show in which Ronnie Corbett is due to be married, only to realise too late he has the wrong bride ( Dilys Watling ).

There are many other great sketches which I won't spoil by describing. Buy the D.V.D. for yourself and see these comedy geniuses in action.

Roll on Series 3!

5.0 out of 5 stars A lesson in comedy from the master class , 11 Aug 2007
By Keith White (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
5 stars should only be given the the highest of the high, and this is just that. Some of the comedy is dated but still very funny. The 2 Ronnies use double meanings and clever lyrics in a way that simply ooses class and makes you feel as though you are genuinely being entertained in the old fashioned way.

BUT HANG ON

If your young and your reading this thinking "boring old farts, give me Ben Stiller and coarse modern shock comedy" your really missing something.(Not saying Stiller is bad, just totally different)

Ronnie Barker was one of the greatest actors of his generation, who found his biggest fame through comedy.

Watch this DVD and experience one of the finest actors performing comedy with sublime timing, pure ability, and setting the bar for those to follow. He never even liked a lot of the dressing up, especially in drag, but you would never know. Simply the best, a true comedy class act.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good!
This series is a lot better than Series 1. Firstly, the stars seem more relaxed, and the material is that bit better (or they make it seem that way). Read more
