Amazon.co.uk Review

Accurately described as a bittersweet comedy, this excellent DVD brings together all of the episodes from the first season of Sensitive Skin. And if you missed it first time round, you’re in for a treat.

With Joanna Lumley in the lead role, Sensitive Skin follows her character Davina and Denis Lawson’s Al as a 60-year old couple with a 30-year old son. Their life though is far from idyllic, courtesy of the variety of fears, temptations and jealousies that go to make up their lives. Throw in their assorted friends and relatives too, and it’s quite a cocktail.

What’s pleasing though is how well it works. Courtesy of some clever, witty and mature writing, there’s little shirking away from both the highs and lows of the lives involved. But there’s plenty to enjoy and giggle at too, not least where the aforementioned son is concerned!

As you’d expect, the performances of both Lumley and Lawson are highly potent, and add a sheen of class to an already good quality production. That, mixed in with diligent direction, make Sensitive Skin one of the finer television treats of recent years. It’s unsurprising that it earned a second series.

For now though, consider the first warmly recommended. The six episodes on this DVD cover such a warm, yet occasionally bitter, mix of drama and comedy, that it’s a tricky dish to resist. And we wouldn’t recommend you try to anyway. --Jon Foster

Synopsis

Sensitive Skin is a bittersweet comedy focusing on Davina and Al – a sixty-something professional couple living in London. Darkly funny, with fine performances from the two leads, this is something of an undiscovered gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculously Underrated, 13 Aug 2007
By J. Wright "Jennifer" (Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews

I thought this beautiful, autumnal dark comedy had more wit, pathos, elegaic poise, crafted character, intrigue and complexity than any programme I've seen in recent memory.

I don't know how much more underrated Joanna Lumley could be, but the understated intelligence and gravitas she brings to this role is a joy to watch.

Give me this over a thousand teen dramas any day of the week. At 26 years of age, I found this more compelling resonant and relateable than I can meaningfully articulate here.

Many many thanks for this drama, BBC. It is what they do best. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone with class who isn't a slave to monstrous 'edited by morons' speedy reality TV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely superb, 18 Jul 2007
By Bookish (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This a landmark drama series - written, directed, produced and acted to near-perfection. Joanna Lumley is superb (as always) and the other members of the cast all present their characters with utterly-believeable sincerity. Highly enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars pathos and dark comedy, 27 Jun 2009

I preferred part 1 to part 2 because Dennis Lawson complements Joanna Lumley beautifully. He provides just the right blend of comic pathetic buffoon and poignant love.
