5.0 out of 5 stars The most wicked compilation ever!, 20 Feb 2007
By DavisMiles (New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Triptych (Audio CD)
Unlike the usual boring predictable mood-defined compilation sets, Fred takes us on a twisted journey of tracks from his treasure trove of a vinyl collection. Digital downloads are fine- but the stunning box set packaging and humourous informative notes that accompany this set are wonderful and a reminder why records and CDs must never die. As soon as I saw James Last mixed in with the likes of the Seeds and Freq Nasty, I knew something twisted was going down. You know a compilation like this is a special gem when it sends you off with a shopping list. Now I have a long list of records to hunt out including -to my shock and horror- James Last! Thanks Fred.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eclectic, 7 Mar 2007
Being a confirmed Jellyhead I was intrigued to discover the influences behind some of the most refreshing and engaging music of the last decade. Subsequently I have beem introduced to a veritable musical stew with many genres being fused to provide a thoroughly enjoyable experience, best encapsulated by a track from the Jesus and Mary Chain being welded together with a 'tearjerker' from the national treasure that is Bernard Cribbins. Other nuggets include a Selector b side, Garden Party by Mezzaforte and a paean to God from the BBC radiophonic workshop!. A STRONGLY RECOMMENDED PURCHASE.

5.0 out of 5 stars He's got his whole record collection in his hands !, 19 Nov 2007
What a great album or rather what a great collection of albums. Mr Deakin has been around for some years and has a record collection that defies description - just as it should be. Just as you start to think that this is a "dance" album he'll throw in a total curveball. As an example Steve Miller to Grand Funk Railroad to James Last anyone ? BUT IT WORKS. I think I can probably guarantee that not everyone who buys this will like everything on it - I'm no fan of rap myself but the tracks he's chosen all bed in well with each other. Yes of course it's "just" a mixtape like we've all slaved away at in the privacy of our own bedrooms and that's probably why I like it but it's been professionally done and has introduced me to some stuff I've never heard and would probably never have listened to had I not bought this- I urge all to listen to "Flatbush Waltz" by Andy Statman which is superb.
Thoroughly recommended
