2.0 out of 5 stars Mozart opera as childs panto, 21 Oct 2008

La Finta giardiniera (Mozart 22 - Salzburg Festival 2006)
I am a great fan of updated versions of opera in modern clothes and staging, but this is plain silly.

Mozart certainly intended this as a comic opera, setting it in a modern garden centre is fine, but moving trees/cacti, people dressed up as flowers and characters falling into a Venus flytrap and emerging with their clothes in tatters and covered in blood is going way too far.

It is a shame that a good performance is ruined by this travesty of a production.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mozart 22- La finta giardiniera, 8 Oct 2008
Having never heard or seen La finta giardiniera before I came to view
this certain production with an open-mind, and, on the whole the
experience was very satisfactory. the concept of transporting three of
the opera's protagonists from the mid-18th century to a modern day
Garden Centre appeared to work, giving the whole production a
somewhat surreal feel. the characters of Beliore, played by a rakish
and rather camp John Mark Ainsley along with Ramiro, played by a
love-sick, delinquent-Looking store trainee in the form of
Ruxandra Donose added to the surreal flavour of the production.
Alexandra Reinprecht brought a suitable amount of pathos and
bewilderment to the title role without ever underplaying the opera's
basic comic intentions. the rest of the cast managed to portray just
the correct amount of sexual desire and frustration.

Musically speaking, La finta giardinria is a typical piece of early
Mozart brilliance which foreshadows and gives insights into the wonders
created by the more mature Mozart. When experiencing some of the arias
and scenes in La finta giardiniera it is almost impossible not to be
reminded of certain aspects of the Da Ponte operas, which I would say
proves what an important musical document La finta giardiniera could
claim itself to be. I would also say that this DVD would sit well in
any Mozart Lover's collection and would serve well anybody wanting to
discover Mozart's early operas.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bubblegum opera, 30 Oct 2009
Director Doris Dorrie had the naff idea of setting this opera in a modern garden centre rather than in a garden. More accurately, she sets it in the garden department of a large DIY store with row upon row of high-stacked shelves. The opera starts with Belfiore and Violante, in 18th century costume having a violent row during which he thinks that he has killed her. The scene changes to your local branch of B&Q which, presumably, doubles as a woman's refuge. Violante is now a gardener. Her disguise is a plastic bag placed over her pompadour hairstyle. Everyone else is in modern dress so it is difficult to work out who are the nobles and who are the servants. Eventually I realised that the ones chewing bubblegum are servants and everyone else is aristocratic.

Some amusing ideas flow from the essential naffness of Dorie's concept. While the singers trill we are treated to dancing pansies and garden statues. There is also a good venus fly trap, surely a rip-off from the Rocky Horror Show. One gets the impression in this sort of staging that the director just is not interested in the music and will do anything to take your attention away from it. When I was able to concentrate on the 19 year-old Mozart's music it was pleasant enough but this is no undiscovered Cosi Fan Tutti. Best of the performers is Veronique Gens as a vampish Arminda.
