4.0 out of 5 stars Almost as good as we remembered, 23 Jul 2006

Back in 1989 -- i.e. a long time before 'Dead Ringers' -- the satire on the media offered by 'Radio Active' and 'KYTV' seemed highly original to my ears.

17 years later, these episodes from Series One -- there were three series, by the way -- seems uncannily prescient. We now get the equivalent of 'Sofa Shop' and 12 hours of non-stop caravanning, and we hardly bat an eyelid. It's also great to see again Philip Pope's impression of Bob Dylan singing the songs of Kylie Minogue and of Leonard Cohen singing Rick Astley.

In comparison to the six proper episodes, the pilot is one-dimensional and of generally poor quality. I would imagine the BBC was persuaded to allow the team to make the six episodes largely on the basis of the potential shown in 'Radio Active' on Radio Four.

There are no extras on this DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars "It will make you seriously one hundred and eleven...", 26 Jul 2006
By Ben Ripley (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews

Ah, the halcyon days of satellite television. Those were the times when television producers went by the axiom of 'Quantity not quality' and 'more is less'.
KYTV seriously lampooned the shocking nightmare that was BSB and Sky television ("Just think, for an extra five pounds we could have had Keith Chegwin") and poked merry fun at the tripe that has actually become far too prevalent on television today.

Two of the highlights from this series are: 'The Green Green Show' which takes a look at the worrying state of our environment and cute pitures of fluffy seals; and 'Those Fabulous War Years', which bravely crosses the line of political correctness while discussing the atrocities of the second world war.

I have to admit, the whole series hasn't made me laugh as much now as I remember it did back then, but it still brought back fond memories. There was one moment of genuine brilliance with the firework display featuring the gift of fireworks from America including the catherine wheel and the snake.

There are seven episodes on this disc but sadly, no special features.

Pilot: Siege-side Special

Series one:
1. Launch
2. Big Fight Special
3. The Green Green Show
4. Those Fabulous War Years
5. It's a Royal Wedding
6. Challenge Anna

4.0 out of 5 stars Remarkably prescient for its time !, 16 Dec 2008
While this is clearly low budget comedy, it remains a favourite at the centre of my comedy collection. Some of the topics will be a little dated now, but that adds nostalgia value to a certain extent.

Angus Deayton, Helen Atkinson Wood, the much missed Geoffrey Perkins, Michael Fenton-Stevens and Philip Pope all deliver the laughs.

While "The Day Today" and "Brasseye" are sharper (and ruder!), this provides a much gentler ribbing targeted at News and Current Affairs broadcasting.
