Amazon.co.uk Review

A remarkable achievement and thoroughly engrossing, Broken Saints: The Animated Comic Special is the complete 12-hour adventure series (in 24 chapters) originally posted online between 2001 and 2003. A combination of comic book graphics and Flash animation, Broken Saints features characters that don't move (as in a comic book) but exist in scenes that suggest flowing action simply by introducing additional images or shifting a background (thanks to Flash). Dialogue is rendered via conventional speech balloons, but for this DVD set, actors (including William B. Davis, the "Cigarette Smoking Man" from The X-Files) have been cast to provide voices for the characters, giving the story greater immediacy. Also new is a music score, featuring some muscular rock as well as Mozart. Loads of special features are included, too.

Created by Brooke Burgess, Ian Kirby, and Andrew West, Broken Saints is the complex tale of an unlikely alliance between four individuals from very different walks of life. Shandala is a mysterious, 18-year-old woman from an uncharted Fijian island, altruistic and innocent yet possessed of terrifying powers. Raimi is a young, Canadian developer of security software who encounters a powerful force online and believes something big is about to take place on the planet. Oran is a Muslim from Baghdad who goes temporarily mad while guarding a bunker alone. Kamimura is an elderly, Shinto mystic from Japan estranged from his former Buddhist order. The quartet is connected through common visions of dark forces about to be unleashed, though they also learn quite a bit about themselves and each other during their perilous mission. Watching this series from beginning to end is a special and unique experience. As the story progresses, the makers of Broken Saints get better and better at their mixed-media technology, and the results are often beautiful and profound. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars The best indepent film yet!, 23 Aug 2006

I've known about Broken Saints for almost 3 years and bought the very first copy they bought out. This is the best thing on the web to date.
For this though you have to open your mind and even though it seems slow at first you'll realise it's worth the wait. This inspired me to start writing again and I hope that this will make Hollywood rethink the kind of films it will do in the future.
Brooke Burgess and his team are the greatest thing to come out of Canada and their work should be shown to all the world. Well Done Guys!

4.0 out of 5 stars VERY BIZARRE, BUT VERY INVENTIVE, 5 Sep 2007
This is probably one of the most interesting and bizarre animated series you are likely to see.

A word of warning, this is not a true animated film. The series is Flash animated, using static images, much like a comic book. There is 'animation', but not to the same degree as in most animated films.

The basic story is a about a group of disparate strangers, brought together through strange visions. As they come together they uncover a conspiracy to brainwash the entire planet. The story is often ludicrous and convoluted, but strangely compelling. There is conspiracy on conspiracy, with the 'Broken Saints' struggling to fight many enemies, both real and imagined. This leads to many bizarre episodes, and will often leave you wondering what is happening.

The characters are very interesting and are as strange as the story itself. Each of the Saints comes from a different part of the world and are brought together by horrific visions. Throughout the series each character confronts there own demons and there own pasts. This makes for great viewing, as each saint has a fascinating back-story which is often weird and disturbing.

One thing that sets this series apart is the 'animation'. In places it can look unfinished, but as an idea and a concept it is to be highly commended. Some of the effects that have been created are unique and often psychedelic. Watching this series is like being assaulted, with colours and images dancing around the screen in fits of activity. Other parts of the story are more subtle, adding tension and suspense in a way you wont see in any other 'animated' series.

As inventive as this series is it does suffer, at times from an incoherent story. It can be complicated, and at times confusing. It has a tendency to jump around leaving you slightly bewildered. The animation also suffers, it can look patchy, but in some places it is brilliant and highly imaganitive. It is shame that this quality is not present throughout the entire series. Regardless of these niggles, this is a must own, and well worth buying.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ho Hum - Not quite as impressive as you may have been led to believe!, 23 Sep 2006
By Nicholas Forro (UK) - See all my reviews

Some ideas piched from here and some from there... Clockwork Orange meets meets... well just about every Dystopian piece of Science Fiction ever written. The prose is Purpler than Nero's robe. The worst part are the long quasi religious, mumbo jumbo, cod philosophic monologues which open each chapter. They are *NOT* half as clever as the writer clearly believes them to be. Just because you can string together words which have the appearance of depth does not mean they have depth. This is impressive sounding nonsense. Still quite entertaining at times. Buyers be warned this isn't really an animated film... it is a flash animation. You know like on the web...
