5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and beautiful but highly modified variation, 11 April 2008
This is the film version of Mozart's first Opera seria written in 1770 for La Scala Theatre in Milan. It is here performed in the Palladio theatre at Vicenza to great effect. Thus combining a late baroque and pre- classical musical masterpiece with a masterpiece of Italian renaissance classical architecture. The concept of this version by Ponnelle is very luxuriant and dramatic. The costumes are exquisite and the singing of Yvonne Kenny (Aspasia) is fantastic if not definitive. She is completely immersed in the role. Gosta Winbergh sings the title role of Mitridate with great theatricality, if at times lacking in the finer subtleties of the role. Ann Murray as Sifare, the good brother and Anne Gjevang, the bad brother brother sing well and are excellently and symmetrically matched, vocally as well as visually. There is absolutely no trace of the hooting in the voice of Gjevang as there is sometimes.
For dramatic reasons the role of Arbate, the Governator of Ninfea is completely revised and adapted for this version as a third son of the King and is sung by a young boy from the boy's choir of Gorgonzola, eliminating almost all the arias for Arbate as written by Mozart. Also for dramatic reasons a majority of the recitatives have all been eliminated. This makes the opera more compact (124 minutes versus the full 175 minutes) and increases the drama and expedites the flow of the work. As conceived here it is a highly enjoyable musical and visual feast (mostly one glorious aria after another with few recitatives) and sumptuous sets and costumes. But for purists or historians this version would probably be considered an anathema (cutting and adapting the work of the greatest musical genius of all times) but it does work very well, and should be considered a variation made for film (like an adaptation of a book for a film). I think this is a very good way to get to know and enjoy this opera and to understand its relation to the previous baroque period, especially the operas of Handel. For the complete musical work one should listen to the Rousset recording on Decca with Bartoli, Dessay, Piau, Sabbatini or the recording on Carus.
High entertainment and insightful and dramatic version although manipulated and modified by the director Ponnelle.
