Synopsis
Steven Spielberg directed this blockbuster thriller based on the popular book by Michael Crichton. Millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) asks two dinosaur experts (Laura Dern and Sam Neill) to act as consultants on his entrepreneurial endeavor--an amusement park with DNA-cloned live dinosaurs as the main attraction. The paleontologists, along with a mathematician (Jeff Goldblum) and Hammond's two grandchildren, takes a run-through tour of the park. But soon the joyride turns to terror when an impending hurricane, an unscrupulous engineer (Wayne Knight), and the rebelling dinosaurs begin to destroy the park. Spielberg considered the most popular star of the film to be a computer-generated Tyrannosaurus rex. The special effects in general are spectacular. As Hollywood's preeminent director, Spielberg was used as a kind of financial savior for Universal Studios, which was hurting economically prior to the dinosaurian venture. Spielberg made a deal with Universal--his dream project, Schindler's List, would be green-lighted if he agreed to make JURASSIC PARK for the studio first. By the time Schindler's List premiered in December 1993, Jurassic Park, which had been released six months earlier, had broken E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial's worldwide box-office record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Would still pass in cinemas today. No question, 8 Sep 2006

This has to be, without a doubt, one of the finest adventures of all time, with a little handy work from Steven Speilberg and co.
Being a little lad at the time, Jurrasic Park totally caught my imagination. It was a movie that sparked other kids imaginations too, and led to the release of many amazing toys being produced, from a rubber T-Rex, to the 'lesser' little raptor I recieved one christmas instead... hmm
As with alot of Hollywoods best films, the plot is relatively simple, and is now all too familiar after all these years. A billionaire (Richard Attenborough) decides to create a theme park based entirely around a dinosaurs. Although the film actually starts with the park being pretty much complete, invited guests are sent around the park to evaluate it, and learn that the generation of dinosaurs come from mosquitos through an interesting process - nicely shown though a funny cartoon!
But as mathematician Jeff Golblumm soon explains, humans from the current age and dinosaurs from millions of years ago can't adapt, as they soon find out!... For 1993, the effects where unbelievable. Terminator 2 had only come out not long before, and too see how special effects had changed even since then was incredbible. Its fair to that the T-Rex in particular, on its first 'sighting' in the film, would still out-do computer effects today. It not only looks photo realistic, but the way it interacts with the environment, from crashing down bushes/trees to even puddles is sensational. Of course, the acting takes just a big role, and its brilliant. Sam Neill plays a great adventurer, while Jeff Goldblumm is great as he tries to make a theory out of everything.
Its a film for everyone and on this dvd, you get some nice extra features, including some footage on the making of it, which explains how they used animotronics in certain scenes etc.
A truly perfect film, and Speilbergs previous film, Hook, was also an excellent film, and I reccomend both!

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Greatest Adventure Of All Time", 2 Jan 2006
By J. Michell "jonbob_the_great" (Essex, England) - See all my reviews

For once i believe a film delivers exactly what the tagline describes. Right from it's horrific, tension-mounting opening, to the "Final Showdown" style ending, JURASSIC PARK is an adventure you won't forget. I first saw this film when i was 5 years old and it happened to be the first film i ever saw in a cinema. And what a film to start with!!

With Steven Spielberg, you come to expect certain things within a film. For instance, you know the visual effects will be of the highest quality. JURASSIC PARK is certainly no exception. Being one of the first films to use CGI on mass, the computer generated dinosaurs blend flawlessly with the anamatronic animals to create an effect so realistic you'll be scared to ever close your kitchen door again (the infamous raptor sequence).

In terms of plot, the movie does somewhat differ from the book. Without spoiling it for newcomers, let's just say some of the characters left at the end should have been victims according to Michael Crichton. However, the storyline flows very well, providing the audience with enough action to allow for some of the more mellow scenes.

The characters in the film are very, very well acted and even the children are believable when screaming at a dinosaur which isnt really there. It's good to know that (at the time) these actor's were not Hollywood's biggest stars, meaning the emphasis is placed upon their acting instead of the looks.

Overall, i think everyone should see this film. It's the perfect family film (recently voted into the top 15 family films of all time on Channel 4). I've grown up with the film and i've seen it so many times i know the script backwards. But i still notice little bits which make it better every time.

It's great the first time and the 100th time. I certainly rate it as one of the best movies ever made. Don't miss out!!!

PS: One thing i would say is that i dont know how this edition differs from the last one released. As it hasnt shown a cover i do not know if it's a new design or it there are more discs than before. If you're not too sure either, then perhaps look into buying the trilogy or the exisitng edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars "But when The Pirates of the Carribean breaks down, the pirates don't eat the tourists!", 26 Aug 2006

As a child, we are all fascinated by dinosaurs and for some of us, that fascination grows with us into adulthood. Jurassic Park is the movie for all us young at heart kids out there, who long to see a triceratops or pat a friendly mammoth!

From that first sight of the brachiosaur striding through the trees, we are hooked. Steven Spielberg then proceeds to reel us in with the revelation that a T-Rex can run at 45 miles an hour and, with a rousing swell of music and a stunning visual, issues the coup de grace and shows us that dinosaurs do indeed walk the earth once more. The stage is set for one of the most innovative movies of all time.

The basic idea is simple. John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) recreates dinosaurs from DNA found in fossilised mosquitos and uses it to populate the ultimate theme park. Before opening the park to the paying public, he gathers together a small group of observers, including his two grandchildren, to view the exhibits and give their expert advice.

Now, if Hammond had created all vegetation eating dinosaurs, the park would have been much safer. There would also have been no movie because, when all is said and done, the triceratops is impressive but it's the predators that everyone wants to see and very soon we all get our wish.

Before you can say 'Chaos Theory', a technical hitch shuts down all the fences and the dinosaurs go on the rampage. Alan Grant (played nicely by Sam Neill) and Hammond's grandchildren are stranded out in the field, while Hammond and his Park crew are trapped back at base with the rest of the surviving observers, figuring out a way to bring the power back on line while avoiding the prowling velocirapters (somewhat unsuccessfully!)

Jurassic Park is a feast for the eyes and a technical revelation. Gone are the clunky stop-motion dinosaurs of yesteryear. These dinosaurs are graceful and have a fluidity of movement that only their real-life counterparts could ever top. And when they attack! - well suffice it to say that these beasts are downright scary!

Much copied, but never bettered, Jurassic Park still stands as the definitive dinosaur movie. Miss it at your peril!
