Synopsis

Three men who have led very different lives are reunited by the funeral of a mutual friend in this second feature film from writing-directing team Neil Hunter and Tom Hunsinger (BOYFRIENDS). Stuart's accidental death leads his brother-in-law, his boyfriend, and his best friend to reconsider some of the choices they have made in their lives and, in some cases, gives them the courage to try things they have never tried before. Stuart's brother-in-law, Dan (Bill Nighy), is a loyal father and a faithful husband to Judy (Ellie Haddington) who is suddenly tempted by an exotic stranger (Clementine Celarie). Following the death of his lover Stuart, restaurateur Nick (Tom Hollander) is forced to confront his emotions when he is drawn to a woman (Sukie Smith). Carefree wanderer Tim (Douglas Henshall) faces adulthood for the first time when he falls in love with a local girl (Josephine Butler). Told in three sections from the perspective of each of the three main characters, this modern romance takes a remarkable look at how delicately lives can be intertwined and how the simplest action done by one person can affect so many others.

5.0 out of 5 stars superb film, 29 Sep 2003
By A Customer
This is an excellent film, cleverly written with the story looked at from three different perspectives. Superb performances, and stunning scenery, together with some very clever and funny twists to the plot, make this a joy to watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent British Film, 29 Oct 2004
By C. Newbury "howlingcoyote" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This film is many things, of which 'hilarious' is definitely not one of them. Beautifully filmed with a wonderful setting and equally brilliant soundtrack. I smiled, I cringed and I cried. And then I went out and bought a copy of it.
Very cleverly mastered with a poignant and powerful look into the lives of three people who were touched by the death of another. As one critiqe put it 'No weddings and a Funeral'. In the same genre as Perfect Strangers and Shooting the Past.
If you like quirky British filmmaking, you will love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, subtle and true to life., 2 Jun 2005
By popeye cresswell (lancaster, lancs United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
How refreshing to see a film that punches way above its budgetary weight, making a mockery of big budget star driven and cloying Hollywood fayre.

As anyone who watches the "extras" contained in the DVD package will discover, the guts of the film draw on the talents and commitment of a fine ensemble of British actors. There is no sense of the directors ramming a story / life view down your throat and the way in which it reflects real life, with a never ending stream of interlocking events and perspectives is seamless.

Some fine acting -- people won't be surprised to know that Bill Nighy is magnificent, and that Douglas Henshall and Josephine Butler have an effortless natural charisma that fills the screen.

It's a film that will reward watching repeatedly to fully capture the matrix of emotions and events, so brilliantly captured in the film score. A film for all seasons and stages of life.
