Amazon.co.uk Review

Amid the lo-fi wasteland of the 1990s, Dream Theater were an unashamedly unhip throwback to the glory days of progressive rock; and in their 1999 album Scenes from a Memory they even dared to exhume that once-extinct species, the concept album. In 2000 the band took Scenes on the road, and the resulting concert footage is a testament both to their musical creativity and the fanatical loyalty of their audiences.

Filmed on a sweltering August evening in New York, this was the last time the band played the album right through, using an on-stage narrator and even bringing on a Gospel choir for the grand finale. But the heat of the night is nothing to that generated by the blistering performances from a group of unrepentant musos who like nothing better than to play in complex time signatures and thrash out lengthy riffs at dizzying speed.

Those not already converted will doubtless be puzzled by the sight of five hairy blokes earnestly expounding a quasi-operatic story of dying and "learning to live", while drummer/director Mike Portnoy’s decision to intercut film snippets of the album's story with the concert footage seems redundant. But fans of this band, and anyone who yearn for the classic days of Rush, Genesis and Yes, will have nothing to complain about here: don’t believe the music press, prog-rock is alive and well.

On the DVD: here’s a disc that’s going to make this band's audience very happy indeed. Aside from the main concert itself there are five additional tracks--and this being Dream Theater, they are all pretty substantial, climaxing with the epic "A Change of Seasons". Then there’s a fun 25-minute behind-the-scenes documentary with crew and fans waxing enthusiastic about the band, and even more additional concert footage. The whole band gather to provide a concert commentary, which ordinarily might seem an odd thing to do, but this is prog-rock after all. A picture gallery of tour photos rounds out the extras. Sound is unfussy Dolby stereo.--Mark Walker

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 7 April 2002
Having never (yet) had the chance to see Dream Theater live, I became very interested in this DVD. Once I had finally purchased the DVD, I was not disappointed whatsoever.

Firstly, there is the entire live rendition of Scenes from a Memory. This 16 track wonder really hits home, showing how amazing these muscians really are. They show wonderful verstility in this set, having to adjust from relatively slow numbers such as "The Spirit Carries on" and "Through Her Eyes" to much quicker works like "The Dance of Eternity" and "Home". The fact that they can adjust so easily on stage just illistrates how good they really are. The sound quality is great, and the picture quality is even better!

Next up are the 'Deleted Scenes'. A collection of bonus live material. This one hour feast includes Erotomania, Voices, The Silent Man, Learning to Live, and the only live release of their 24 minute classic "A Change of Seasons". All of these are excellent, but "A Change of Seasons" is really one of the most awesome pieces of music I have ever heard, especially seeing as though it is performed live! I would have bought the DVD just for that song alone.

Just when you thought that you couldn't find anything more on the DVD, Mike Portnoy suprises us again with a rather unique band commentry that spans the entirety of the live scenes footage. In the commentary they help you to understand the story behind the music as you go through, and also give you insights into where the inspiration for various parts of the music came from. For the musicians amongst Dream Theater's audience, the band do delve a little into the various musical concepts shown in the footage too.

If you thought this wasn't enough - there is still more! A gallery of photos in the form of a slideshow is next. Mostly taken by Mike Portnoy on the tour they depict the various venues, along with some amusing ones of the band and people behind the scenes.

Finally to sum up the DVD there is a nice documentary showing snippets of film taken before the gig at the Roseland Ballroom of the band warming up, along with parts dedicated to the fans.

All in all, this is a stunning DVD packed full of extras! Any music fan who is prepared to adapt slightly will enjoy this DVD. As for the Dream Theater fans, it is a MUST buy - you're collection is not complete without it!

5.0 out of 5 stars It really dont get any better than this, 1 Oct 2003
By Mr M J Mueller (Chatteris, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Although I have seen DT three times and have all of their albums, this band never fails in knocking me for six every time I hear or see them. Each of the band is known for being the best at what he does. You really dont need to be 'into' rock music to appreciate this DVD. With Dream Theater it goes deaper than that. Mike Portnoy hammers home his title of worlds best rock drummer, John Petrucci who is widely regarded as the best guitarist in the world is simply amazing. James Labrie who due to the nature of the music and the lengths of the shows, has not always been as immaculate on stage as he is in the studio gives one of the best performances I have seen live. John Myung is just well...... John Myung, cool, calm, faultless. Jordon Rudess seems like he has been part of the band forever and plays a big part in the production and direction of the performance. If you are serious about 'music' regardless of genre, buy this DVD and try some of the albums, trust me when I say that you will not be dissapointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars "We are the music makers, we are the dreamers of dreams", 3 Aug 2004
I love this band! Dream Theater makes music for the active listener. They are fast, precise, ambidextrous, and varied. Every song and album is an epical journey.

The DVD contains some visuals (or cut-scenes) that try to communicate the story and inspiration behind SFAM. The cut-scenes didn't do the music justice, which is a pity, since the band has the word "Theater" in their name, and theatrics should appeal both auditory and visually. This doesn't bother me too much, though, because DT for me is all about the music. And, the cut-scenes ain't often. But, my rating does drop one star, just to be fair. [ As a true DT fan my argument still stands that when you listen to DT, you close your eyes, and dream up your own awesome visuals, but not everyone agrees with this. ]

The camera-work is very satisfying. Thought has been put into combining certain angles onto one screen (for instance the Rudess/Petrucci show-off, and of course Mr Portnoy's exceptional drumming).

This is a must have for any DT fan, guitarist, drummer, bassist, keyboardist, any musician for that matter. DT is eye-candy technically.
