Amazon.co.uk Review

Like It Is is much like watching a train wreck--the very idea of it is repellent and yet you perversely can't avert your eyes. While its urban grittiness and sooty veneer entranced some critics who mistook its violent, netherworld neorealism for art, Like It Is offers little in the way of redemption, positive gay imaging or even particularly good narrative. Paul Oremland directed this venture about a young, gay Blackpool tough named Craig (Steve Bell) who bare-knuckle boxes for money. He ultimately moves to London in search of a better life and falls in with the trendy London gay-club scene, meeting and falling for a handsome record producer named Matt (Ian Rose) and his wealthy boss (played by the Who's lead singer Roger Daltrey). The better life is quickly tainted by disillusion and misery, much as is the viewing experience. Steve Bell is, in real life, a featherweight boxing champion in Britain and therefore brings an urgent and raw vitality to the lead, but the characters as a whole are either irritating or unsympathetic, and it's ultimately difficult to find anyone to care for, or a story worth empathising with. --Paula Nechak, Amazon.com

DVD Description

Craig, a cute, closeted bare-knuckle fighter lives in a violent world, where winning is everything - but losing can mean death. When Craig meets Matt, attraction is instant, but Craig can't handle intimacy. Though their first night is a disaster, Craig follows Matt back to London, but his friends are suspicious and try to ward him off Craig. For Craig, 'sophisticated' Soho is a revelation, but how can he stay when those closest to the man he loves want him gone? And if he leaves, will Matt throw aside his success and ambition to be with the first guy he has ever truly loved?

4.0 out of 5 stars Give it a chance, 15 Sep 2005
I think the majority of reviews below seem to be far too harsh on this film. Ok, so it's an independent film that's been made on a very tight budget (it shows) and the script is not perfect. So what? Not every movie needs to be a "blockbuster" to be good. At least it isn't you're typical cliche gay coming out film and the characters all have depth even if it isn't always explored to the max. I'd recommend renting it before shelling out 20 quid to buy it, but don't be put off the unfavourable reviews - give it a go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Craig 21 year-old northern lad, Boxing Champ and gay, 15 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Craig (Bell) is a 21 year-old northern lad into bare-knuckle boxing. In reality Bell is the UK's ABA Featherweight Boxing Champ. A chance encounter with Matt (Rose) leads to a quick and agonising sex session as Craig begs to be penetrated. It changes them them both.

Craig flees to London and moves in with Matt. Living in Soho, Craig comes to grips that there is a gay lifestyle and its better than what he had back home. However life is not good, Matts flatmate and boss tell him to dump Craig - who in turn must return home for one last fight.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really true-to-life British "gay" film - north and south, 18 Jul 2008
By Andrew (London, England) - See all my reviews
This film lives up to the title. It depicts life "Like it is". (Or maybe as it was not so long ago). As a Scot in London once with a partner from the north-west of England this reminds me of the difference in culture between north and south (particularly with London itself). Some critics have been hard on this film and the actors but I thought it really reflected true to life characters in and linked to the gay world in different places. The actors show the world as it is, both in London and in the "not-so-gay" world outside. I thought this film was excellent - and Dani and Roger were perfect in context. Come to London, you might meet the same characters!
