Amazon.co.uk Review
The story of Fortress takes place in drastically overpopulated America of the year 2017, where each woman is allowed only one pregnancy. John Brennick (Christopher Lambert) and his wife Karen (Loryn Locklin) flee to Mexico when she becomes pregnant after the death of their first child. They are captured by border police and sent to the Fortress, a subterranean high-security prison owned by the Men-Tel corporation and operated by "Zed-10", an omnipotent computer system, and a sadistic, genetically "enhanced" warden (Kurtwood Smith) who has nefarious plans involving Brennick's wife and unborn child. Along with his cellmates (including Jeffrey Combs, a favourite of director Stuart Gordon), Brennick plots a breakout and Fortress shifts into auto-pilot action mode.

After making his reputation with such audacious horror films as From Beyond and Re-Animator, Stuart Gordon graduated to a bigger budget with Fortress but his penchant for exploitation remains deliriously intact. While borrowing elements from a variety of better sci-fi movies, Fortress indulges every prison-flick cliché, but does it with such enjoyable B-movie vigour that it qualifies as a bona-fide guilty pleasure (indeed, it deserves to be ranked with James Cameron's original Terminator in terms of its budgetary ingenuity). Featuring such giddy (and gory) devices as "intestinators" (deadly obedience devices implanted in prisoners' bodies) and a torturous "Mind Wipe Chamber", this is really just a drive-in action movie with lofty ambitions and the schlocky script hasn't a prayer of rising above the level of juvenile popcorn fodder. But there's no denying the energy and enthusiasm that Gordon brings to the film, which understandably became a global box-office hit and spawned a 1999 sequel starring Lambert and Pam Grier. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Christopher Lamberts enters the hi-tech hell., 26 Jul 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Fortress [VHS] [1994] (VHS Tape)
Fortress is a (18) classified: Sci-fi film starring: Christopher Lambert (Highlander 1,2 and 3), which later in 1999 spawned a sequel Fortress 2: re-entry. Christopher Lambert, you know his name, you've reconized him for his perfomances in films such as: Highlander, Ressurection and Mortal Kombat. Lambert joins Director Stuart Gordon (Director of Re-animator) to star in this classic futuristic prison movie. The film is set in the 21st century, in a bordered United states of America, where due to the population ratings, married couples are only allowed to have one child. Lambert stars as Captain John Brennick, a EX black beret, who has innocently broken the law, his wife Karen is breeding their second child, after their first child died. After being caught by Border security officers, Brennick is transported to a High-tech escape proof prison called Fortress, and escape there is impossible, unless Brennick forms a plan to escape. The film features bloody violent action scenes, including brilliant special effects, especially with helmeted guards who are men turned mechanoids. "They've taken a guy, and wired him to the mainframe" Jeffrey Combs (The Frightners) makes a famous performance as D-DAY, Brennick's cellmate who is a very good electronic expert. And Kurtwood Smith (Rambo 3) plays the evil warden who is a robot who allows a computer system named Zed to operate the prison. FORTRESS delievers top action and sci-fi. For those who loved Christopher Lambert in the Highlander series, will have to rush down to the video shop, and order FORTRESS.

10/10

3.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth a watch., 4 Jun 2006
By Zodgrod (England) - See all my reviews
Entertaining science fiction fare, with Lambert giving one of the best performances in his career. Gets a bit too silly at the end, but overall Fortress is an enthralling sci fi/action prison flick. Contains some gore, which was a nice surprise. We are treated to some male nudity but sadly no female nudity - anyone would think this was made in the '80s. Well, 1992 actually, so that's pretty close. Computers are often badly depicted in hollywood films (beep beep access denied), but this film has a particularly hilarious case of it. 'INSTALL D-DAY'S REVENGE VIRUS'. Ha!

The DVD comes widescreen with a very sharp print, surround sound, and subtitles in english, french and spanish. The U.S. theatrical trailer is included.

Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Guilty Pleasure....., 13 Jun 2009
By Barbie Bino (Scotland) - See all my reviews
We all know that Christopher Lambert is no DeNiro and his movies are.. well... dodgy in the main. I got this movie in the bargain bucket because I was running low on sci-fi I hadn't seen. I expected a dodgy B movie. What a surprise I got!! This film is actually really good!!!

Lambert is not that wooden in it! The concept and story is excellent. The movie is exciting and largely believable. As has been said by another reviewer - there are some silly moments but if you like sci-fi and you like action i challenge you not to enjoy this!!
