Product Description

Product Description

Has Pearce finally found his match? A time-served Edinburgh hard man, Pearce is still recovering from the recent loss of his mother in a stabbing incident in a post office robbery. He's invited by the dysfunctional Baxter family to protect their pregnant 16-year-old daughter from Wallace, her 26-year-old husband, a man with a penchant for killing family pets. Having found out that the baby's not his, Wallace has sworn vengeance. Pearce declines the job: he's no babysitter. But when Wallace kills Pearce's dog, he goes too far. Now it's personal. It's time to find out who the real hard man is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome comes close to describing it., 16 Jan 2009
I'm now hearing Guthrie being hailed as the new premier writer of Scottish crime fiction and with all due respect to those on the wane, I couldn't agree more.
I can't think of a single other writer who can accurately depict a main character who is all-at-once the hardest man imaginable, yet crumbles to pieces at the thought of a crippled dog coming to any more harm.
Also, before reading this I couldn't imagine anyone accurately describing the hallucinogenic hell of tripping on mushrooms, tied up in a basement and soon to be carved up with a chainsaw. I can now.
Devotees of Scottish crime fiction. All hail the new king!

5.0 out of 5 stars Guthrie is at his best with Hard Man. Excellent!, 26 April 2007

(REAL NAME)
Hard Man is a book that you really can't put down. Guthrie has created something wonderfully dangerous and terrifyingly addictive in his characters, as he skillfully manipulates their sadistic, somewhat depraved minds. As I read the book I could hardly breathe, sitting on the edge of my seat in anticipation, unable to put it down until the last page was read. Guthrie is probably the best crime writer of our time.
