Product Description

Captain Chakotay, one-time Maquis resistance fighter, is ready to prove himself as the new commanding officer of the Starship Voyager -- but sceptics back at Starfleet Command are watching him closely for any sign that he will revert to his renegade Maquis ways. His first mission as captain, to transport a group of displaced colonists back to their home planet of Loran II, seems easy enough: make sure the planet is safe for colonisation, unload the settlers, and head back to Earth. He even has an extra reason to enjoy the trip -- his sister Sekaya has joined the mission as a spiritual advisor to the gentle and peace-loving colonists. But on Loran II hey discover a mysterious storm, an ominously deserted settlement and a hidden threat from Chakotay's past that could destroy them all. Will his career as captain be over before it has even begun?

4.0 out of 5 stars A little sticky but quite enjoyable, 17 Jan 2005
By Perfectbub "Fiona" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book continues the Voyager post-return series. And I must say that I did not think it half bad. The choice of Harry Kim as Security Chief was a tad odd but the new characters I liked. the tennis scene with the new first officer was inspired.

The ending will knock your socks off and the reintroduction of old enemies is clever.

All in all a Star Trek Book that will delight Voyager fans and make them crave the second book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Introduction to a new era, 24 Jan 2005

I have to agree with you feefers_. I loved this book. I hadn't really read any Star Trek books until I was recommended this one by my girlfriend but thank god I did, I loved this book and am currently reading the second one.
I was also a little curious about Kim being Security Chief, and I kinda miss the old voyager crew, particularly the Doctor but as a follow on this is a great place to start. It keeps enough of the old but introduces enough of the new!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not really sure what to make of it, 26 Dec 2008

So, it's the first official mission of Voyager after 6 months back in the Alpha Quadrant...

The plot of this one didn't feel like it was moving as fast as Homecoming to me, but once I got to the halfway point, it felt like it picked up a bit.

As a couple of other people have noted, Kim now at the tactical station is a bit hard to swallow, but I'm prepared to give it a chance. Also, it's probably not an important thing to fit in the book but Voyager has been in the Delta Quadrant for seven years, and when Chakotay takes command it's apparently reset to factory settings - no refit, no upgrades, in fact, downgraded if anything. I like my Trek Tech, so I was hoping Golden would throw me a bone here!

I'm still not sure what to make of the fact that there are only apparently three characters from the show still on the ship... It would be unfeasible for the crew to still be together, but to have spread as far apart as they have still strikes me as a bit odd.

There are few plots kicked off in this story (and a couple carried over from Homecoming/Farther Shore), which don't seem to interact with one another. I don't mind this so much as some are more interesting than others, and there are usually two or three different threads dealt with in a chapter.

That's what I'm not sure to make of it - it's good to keep all the main cast in the book and doing their various tasks, but it can also detract from the main plot of the book.

The Big Reveal at the end of the book left me a little cold, as I'd kinda pieced together what was going to happen before I got to the last page. Still, it was a short pleasant read that kept boredom at bay for an evening or two. I'm quietly hopeful part two will be better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh, this does not bode well...
With the train wreck that was The Farther Shore, one had to wonder about the continuation of the Star Trek: Voyager series. Read more
