4.0 out of 5 stars fall from grace, 28 Aug 2003
this is a brave and largely very successful attempt at tackling a tough assignment. the fall's history is serpentine and (in parts) unascertainable and the author roots it out through a good selection of interviews with key witnesses. mes himself was not available. if he had been, this would have been a very different (and probably better) book.

that said, a vivid, if not especially intimate, picture of mes and the fall is painted. and as a keen long-time fan of the music who has never paid that much attention to the band's history, I got on very well with this book.

one quibble is that the structure tends to mirror the album-tour-album life cycle of the/any band. when your subject lasts 25+ years that can lead to repetition (sic).

the chronological structure does, however, lend itself very well to what I took to be the book's theme: the progressive decline in the band's fortunes and (many will disagree with this) the quality of its output. the bemused and rueful accounts by band members of events post-93 end the book on a downer from which only a blast of Mere Pseud Mag Ed can lift the reader

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Enjoyable and Informative Read, 2 Nov 2003

I have liked the music of The Fall for a long time and of course always found Mark E Smith an enigma, however I knew very little about the history of the band. This book takes the reader through this history starting from the very beginning and early gigs through to the present day. The author has spoken to basically everyone to do with the band apart from MES - which you could argue gives it greater objectivity, given that MES is clearly such a control freak if you wanted his participation you would have to write the book on his terms. I get the impression that the book could have been written as a series of anecdotes about the bizarre behaviour of MES, but that the author pulled back and instead went for a more straight forward history - although with enough weird stories to give a pretty clear picture of what life with The Fall must be like. I have to say that I found the book interesting all the way through, in spite of the fact there is a lot of cover I don't think it gets too repetitive.
