Product Description

Product Description

This clear introduction explains technical terms such as iambic pentameter and syllabics, defines verse metres such as blank and free verse and illustrates a variety of forms, from the sonnet to freer modes favoured by contemporary writers.

From the Back Cover

Poetry criticism is a subject central to the study of literature. However, it is laden with technical terms that, to the beginning student, can be both intimidating and confusing. Philip Hobsbaum provides a welcome remedy, illuminating terms ranging from the iambus to the bob-wheel stanza, and forms from the Spenserian sonnet to modern 'rap', with clarity and comprehensiveness. It is an essential guide through the terminology which will be invaluable reading for undergraduates new to the subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Analysis of Poetry, 13 Nov 2009
I do not think, as the other reviewer has suggested, that this book is a "waste of paper". This book can really give the reader an idea of exactly how poetry is crafted, from how stresses in syllables make a difference to the content and theme of the poem. Along with meter and rhythm, Hobsbaum discusses blank verse, "the heroic couplet", rhyme and pararhyme, sprung verse, quantity and syllabics, free verse and verse forms. This is, I find, a comprehensive and enlightening collection and has really opened my eyes to the value and depth of poetry (not just lyrically or thematically but in the structure of the words and their overall addition to the poem itself).

A great book for undergraduates like myself who want to step up their mark on English Literature from A-Level. I am an A grade A-level literature student but still find that I can learn more about the language, and as I felt I was a bit shaky on poetry and verse I decided to get this book out of my university library. Its a useful addition to any lit-student's bookcase.

1.0 out of 5 stars One to avoid, 25 April 2008
I cannot see to whom or how this book could be of use. It is not so much an introduction to metre etc., as a catalogue of the various effects possible in poetry; there is no discussion of the significance of the examples given, and no defense of its utility. The subject of this book is deeply enriching; I only hope that no one is put off by this waste of paper.
