Product Description

Product Description

Sven Hassel and the few surviving men of his unit are posted to Italy, where the armies are locked in battle around the ancient hilltop monastery of Monte Cassino. Hitler has ordered that every position must be held until the last, and every lost position recaptured by counter-attack. In the face of overwhelming Allied firepower, Sven and his mates cling to the mountainside knowing they cannot defy the odds for ever. From no-holds-barred descriptions of the frontline combat to partisan attacks and adventures in Rome on leave, MONTE CASSINO is classic Sven Hassel.

About the Author

Born in 1917 in Fredensborg, Denmark, Sven Hassel joined the merchant navy at the age of 14. He did his compulsory year's military service in the Danish forces in 1936 and then, facing unemployment, joined the German army. He served throughout World War II on all fronts except North Africa. Wounded eight times, he ended the war in a Russian prison camp. He wrote LEGION OF THE DAMNED while being transferred between American, British and Danish prisons before making a new life for himself in Spain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Horror on the Hill, 13 Nov 2003
By Philip Donnelly (St Albans, England) - See all my reviews
The hill is Monte Cassino, and the horror is the carnage of Allied attempts to wrest it from the Germans in 1944, among whom are numbered the lads of the 27th Penal Battalion.
A classic Sven Hassel, with all the right ingredients - blood, guts, fear, high comedy and magnificent courage - with the shattered monastery ruins and the seedy streets of wartime Rome as the backdrop. The plot? Defend the hill to the last man.
The outcome? A compelling tale from the master of World War Two pulp fiction.
Enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, 30 Sep 2003
By H. T. Davies - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the one I read first as a schoolboy and it got me started on the others. This is a more 'conventional' war story than the others, with shades of Alistair Maclean as the 27th don SS uniforms to spirit away the monastery's treasures. Sven's leave in Rome is a bit tedious but the action sequences and the general narrative thread in the rest of the book more than make up for it. As usual with the recipes, I'm not sure I'd try starlings and marrow balls at home!
