This is a re-packaging of an earlier (3CD) Brilliant issue, this time adding the Penguin Guide Rosette-winning version of the 2 Clarinet Concertos performed by Emma Johnson on ASV. It is a solid but unspectacular collection of many of the key works of a now unfashionable composer, highly regarded in his day for his technical innovation in composition and dexterity in performance. A contemporary of Beethoven and Schubert (with whom comparisons are inevitable), Weber speaks with an original voice; the early symphonies are attractive if not particularly substantial works, making effective use of woodwinds and horns; the piano and clarinet works contain passages of tremendous virtuosity; and the overtures, although somewhat uneven in quality, have moments of great poetic beauty. Sound quality is generally good (albeit a little over-bright in places) for these 30+ year old recordings but CD content is rather light (averaging 50 minutes per disc); in particular, the Clarinet Concertino and Grand Duo Concertant that were high points of the original ASV issue are omitted from this collection. I guess also that there are better alternative versions of all of this material. However, at the super bargain price, this is a most attractive and very inexpensive way of exploring the work of a fascinating composer who clearly is far more than just the creator of Der Freischutz and Oberon. Recommended.

good value introduction to an ignored master 22 Aug. 2014
By neasden oz - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Weber, known largely for Die Freischutz and the two Clarinet concerti, was a rival of Beethoven, and (rightly) highly regarded in his day.

This set, including the two Symphonies, several operatic overtures, the clarinet concerti, (but not the concertino), and the piano concerti, is an excellent collection for those unacquainted with this chap's other works.

The Symphonies are clearly a bridge between the formalism of Haydn/Mozart, and the overtly Romantic works that followed Beethoven. They largely sparkle here, if perhaps lacking the whimsy of Haydn, or the Bombast and even bathos of Beethoven.
In places, the treble winds are somewhat harsh

The piano concerti are truly virtuosic, the first more-so.
And, the much loved Clarinet works get excellent treaments.
I find the overtures slighter works, rather lacking in character, though are well played, and I was led into looking at operas other than Die Freischutz.
These are all top-flight perfomers and ensembles, and the recordings mostly good, though I take exception to the harshness of the treble wind in the Symphonies.
Minor quibble, true.
Great value (on Brilliant), all up, so give the bloke a go.

Shorter than usual CD times, lack of content, are disappointing 24 Dec. 2014
By R. Brown - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I was looking for a box set that would replace my small pile of Weber recordings and hopefully save me some shelf space. So I was excited to see that Brilliant Classics had recently added a Weber box to their catalog. I am normally a huge fan of Brilliant's low-budget, but high quality, box sets, but I have to say this is not one of their better collections. Note that the poor star-rating is due to content (or lack thereof), not poor quality.

For starters, 3 of the 4 discs clock in at under 51 minutes each, and the remaining disc at just under 61 minutes. There is so much more music which could have been included here. For example, Disc 4, Overtures, only includes 6 compositions and totals just under 51 minutes. Meanwhile, Naxos has a single disc set of 76 minutes which includes 10 Overtures.

There are also a few other orchestral pieces which could have easily fit on these discs ... the Concertinos for Horn, Oboe and Clarinet, as well as a Bassoon Concerto for example. I guess I am spoiled, because I have come to associate Brilliant Classics with CDs packed to the edges with great music, a "completist's" dream, in many cases.

Fortunately, I did not purchase this set ... I would have been very disappointed. It is definitely not up to Brilliant's normally very generous standards. I don't often review music I have never heard but, again, I have every reason to believe the quality is first-rate as always. It is the lack of depth of this collection which disappoints. If you are looking to fill in your Weber collection, this is probably not the set for you. Hopefully, Brilliant will right this wrong in a future release. Until then, I'll hang on to my individual discs.
