The music of the late Antonio Carlos Jobim occupies a similar place, in a way, to that of Burt Bacharach; Jobim usually wrote seemingly light, "MOR" material with rich and unusual chord changes that attracted jazz musicians, and often depended on others to come up with lyrics to his sometimes deceptively complex tunes. He also made a fortune quite early on when his best-known tune became a world-wide hit.

This bargain package contains 5 Jobim LPs in facsimile mini-sleeves complete with original, impossible-to-read-small-print sleeve notes. The 1st 3 CDs are from the '60s, the 2nd one being a genuine and engaging all-Brasilian orchestra/big band, and feature many of Jobim's first major-label recordings of tunes which later became famous. The final 2 CDs date from the late 70s and early 80s, and for me this is where the problems lie.

To be frank, Jobim at best was an untrained singer, and while this is acceptable - just - and almost attractive in a naive sort of way on the 1st 3 recordings, by the late 1970s and 80s it was not, and he sounds like a very bad, out-of-tune pub Sinatra doing karaoke; so bad that you'd want to throw things and boo him off. The vocals on these re-recordings of earlier songs are well, excruciating!

But apart from that, there is plenty of good MUSIC here; however if you are expecting sun, sand, acoustic guitars and a breathy tenor sax, forget it as the majority of this (4 out of 5 CDs worth) is orchestral/big band stuff.
The music is immortal and unarguable...but the singing is very much an acquired taste; and note the tongue-in-cheek lyrics to 'Desafinado' (by Gene Lees) which there are 2 versions of here..."I took your picture with my trusty Rolleiflex/ but all I developed was a complex"...!

A nice sampler pack... 16 Sept. 2012
By Ted Wilson - Published on Amazon.com

This 'Original Album Series' package is a 5-cd disc set, each presented in a mini-album cover that looks like the original record. Each one includes the front and back cover artwork and album notes just like the lp (I have to use a magnifying glass to read the back cover credits and lyrics). The graphics and font type printed on the actual discs are all the same, using different colors on each one.

The albums are:
1) 'The Wonderful World of Antonio Carlos Jobim', with orchestration by Nelson Riddle. 1965.
2) 'Love, Strings, & Jobim', arranged by Gaya and Deodata. 1966.
3) 'A Certain Mr. Jobim', arranged & conducted by Claus Ogerman (who did my favorite ACJ album 'Wave') 1967.
4) 'Urubu', also with Claus Ogerman. 1976. This album finds ACJ streching his compositional wings, so to speak. He even quotes Carlos Castenada in the liner notes...
5) 'Terra Brasilis', again with Claus Ogerman. 1980. A Frank Sinatra-ish, swan-song kind of work that finds an older, reminiscent ACJ singing with a somewhat weaker, pensive voice. This is actually a double album on one disc.

I prefer the first three, earlier albums in this set, but all comprise a nice sample of ACJ's work. The 5 mini albums come inside a simple cardboard sleeve box. The package is put out by Rhino records through Warner Brothers. I don't think the albums are remastered, but the sound quality seems good to my hearing. Made in the E.U.

Majorly Disappointed 19 Aug. 2014
By Kenneth von Geldern - Published on Amazon.com

I have loved Jobim's work with Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto since I first heard them in the early eighties. Along with the two Getz albums, his best-of albums, "Verve jazz Masters" and "A.C.B.'s Finest Hour" have been some of my favorite albums for years. (Some friends of mine asked me to bring my stereo and these cds to play at their wedding party.) So I was excited to find this set of five of his original albums. But alas, I am very disappointed with the music on these albums. Instead of the subdued excitement of Jobim's acoustic guitar and piano playing, these songs are way over-produced, and much of the artistry is covered up by sappy strings and keyboard pablum. This doesn't compare to to the delightful jazz we have loved as "Jobim's music", it's cheesy elevator pop songs.

This five album set features some of the finest early recordings by Antonio Carlos Jobim. I throughly enjoy this set.
