Biography

As influential as he proved to be during the final decades of his lifetime, it appears that Thelonious Sphere Monk (1917-82) has only gained greater stature in the years since his death. Once considered too eccentric and complex to be appreciated by listeners and other musicians, Monk has become a standard of excellence, as both composer and soloist, for those who seek to extend the jazz ... 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Jazzrook TOP 500 REVIEWER on 9 Jun. 2014
Format: Audio CD
This excellent 2-CD set from the great pianist/composer Thelonious Monk(1917-1982) was recorded live at the It Club in San Francisco on October 31/November 1, 1964 with Charlie Rouse(tenor sax); Larry Gales(bass) & Ben Riley(drums).
Three previously unissued tunes, 'Teo', 'Bright Mississippi' & 'Just You, Just Me' are included and nine others have been restored to full-length with bass & drum solos.
The quartet is on inspired form and Monk is especially exuberant on impressive versions of 'Rhythm-A-Ning', 'Nutty', 'Misterioso' & the rarely-played 'Gallop's Gallop'.
Monk appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1964 and this atmospheric live recording from the same year contains over 150 minutes of inventive and exhilarating modern jazz which captures his great quartet at its peak.

Format: Audio CD
This double Cd recorded at the It club is an absolute gem. Monk plays at his best and the acoustics of the club and quality of the life recording is simply fantastic. Totally recommended.
