a voice teacher and early music fan 24 April 2010
By George Peabody - Published on Amazon.com
PALESTRINA 400 COLLECTION WAS ISSUED TO MARK THE 400TH ANNIVERSARY OF PALESTRINA'S DEATH! Performed and presented by: "The Rock Stars of renaisance vocal music". Thus saith the New York Times.

The collection consists of four CD's (4 hours, 9 minutes); language Latin produced by Gimell Recordings. It contains masses for unaccompanied voices, and the madrigals, motets and plainchants upon which they are based. Sung primarily in Latin, the madrigal sung in Italian.

All works previously released in the Gimell label, 1980-1989. Disc 1 & 2 are analog recordings; discs 3 & 4 are digital recordings. Their is a 41 page booklet with program notes in English, Italian, French and German, and Latin texts with English, French, Italian and German translations.

CONTENTS: Plainchant, Benedicta es (2:24) - Motet, benedicta es, Josquin des Pres (6:55) - Missa benedicta es, Palestrina (41:l5) - Plainchant, Nigra Sum (1:31) - Motet Nigra Sum, L'Heriter (5:07) - Missa Nigra Sum (35:20), Missa Papae Marcelli (36:49), Missa Brevis (21:24) Palestrina - Madrigal, Nasce la gioja mia (2:30) Primavera - Missa Nasce la gioja mia (24:22) Palestrina - Plainchant, Assumpta es Maria(:27) - Motet Assumpta es Maria (7:13), Missa Assumpta es Maria (29:24) - Motet Sicut lilium inter spinas (4:42), Missa Sicut lilium inter spinas (29:16) Palestrina.

Under the direction of Peter Phillips and recorded in the Chapel, Merton College, Oxford, England, and in the church of St Peter and St Paul, Salle, Norfolk, England.

The Tallis Scholars was founded in 1973 by Peter Phillips. They have since established themselves as the leading exponents of Renaissance Sacred Music throughout the world. Phillips has created an ensemble that posseses good tuning and blend, and the purity and clarity of sound that best suits the Renaissance repertoire, which allows every detail of the musical line to be heard. Though through the years the personnel changes it matters not, for the quality remains the same!

Some of the NOTABLE singers on these CD's are: Jane Armstrong, Allison Gough, Deborah Roberts, Allison Stamp, Michael Chance, David Cordier, Robert Harre-Jones, Rufus Muller, Julian Roberts, Joseph Cornwall, Francis Steele and Jeremy White.

THE BOSTON GLOBE: "Anyone familiar with Renaissance music knows that this group has attained superstardom among its ilk".

Though I personally have enjoyed at least two-thirds of the above content, I can't possibly exist without the rest of it, and also some of my recordings are getting a bit 'worn', so if you are a Tallis Scholars follower you my wish to replenish your supply.

Excellent collection of Palestrina 19 Jan. 2010

This is an excellent collection of the music of Palestrina. The box includes 4 discs with many masses of Palestrina, as well as some of his and others' motets. Also included are (typically) the plainchant which the Mass is based on. These are all previous recordings of the Tallis Scholars combined into a box, so if you have these recordings it is nothing new. The performances are wonderful and typical Palestrina. As for the music, it speaks for itself. I highly recommend this boxed-set.
