This was one of the first 'progressive rock' LPs I listened to many years ago on my mates Dansette. (Ask your dad what an LP and Dansette are!).

Those that remember these things will know you had to turn the things over to play the other side.
BUT we never bothered with the first 4 tracks of side 1. The killer and standout track here is the live side 2. The stand out track being Rondo 69.

Now I'm not saying the first four tracks are bad it was just that side two was so dam good. We played that side to death.
The Nice were like that the single 'America' was always an anthem for them.

Indeed we would visit a pub in Hull the Haworth Arms' back in the 70s which had a progressive music disco. The 3 stand out tracks every week were 'See Emily Play' by Pink Floyd, 'Hi Ho Silver lining' -Jeff Beck and America by the Nice.
Each always brought the house down.

Now some people will read this review thinking that I am saying the first 4 tracks from the original LP are bad- they are not. They are studio tracks which to my ear always sound better played live and as extended live track sets.

The live side of the LP has always contained my favourite Nice track Rondo '69 and captures what the Nice were, a really fabulous Live band. That organ sound that Emerson produces drives the trio along. No lead guitars see.
'She belongs to me,' a Bob Dylan song, has Lee Jackson barking out the vocals, his bass guitar being the powerhouse backing with able support by Brian 'Blinky' Davison on the drums.

This revamped CD comes with a couple of extra tracks. This helps swell the shortness of the original LP which totaled about 44 mins.
They all did in those days some LPs just racked up 33 minutes only.
Why the 3 stars?

Ars Longa was the first album the Nice made as a 3 piece (well O'List is on one track, er no, actually he has been replaced by a sound alike). This was a consolidation of the sound. Side one has "Hang on to a Dream" with KE racing up and down the piano keyboard and Lee Jackson trying his best vocalisations. Azreal revisited is a remake of their first single(and much better, the first version sounded like Daddy where did I come from). For Example features some jazzy horns and some more great keyboard from Keith Emerson. Diary of an Empty Day probably is Lee(Keith) Jacksons best vocal track and I like it. Side2 Live, features the best version of Rondo ever and an exhilarating version of Bob Dylans "She Belongs To Me". This was the first great Nice album and with the version of Karelia suite an exercise in organ driven hard rock, this is a must buy. Oh, side one is a little dodgy, until Karelia but after that it rocks.

Oh other reviewer, the vocals are by Lee ( Keith) Jackson the bass player, not, Brian Davison the drummer

Overall a very satisfying album. Agreed, the live material is superior, but the rest is very good too. The vocals might not be everybody's cup of tea, but they only grate somewhat on a couple of tracks. Part of the hallmark of the band.
Having bought and enjoyed this album, I gave in to their Live at the Fillmore East 1969, which should be arriving soon. Sure won't be disappointed.
The service, and condition of the (used) album were both excellent.

Had this on vinyl and always considered it a very good album. Still love Azrael revisited and Hang on to a Dream. Do they make musicians like Keith Emerson any more?

This album demonstrates the best and worst of the Nice. The worst is the dated, boring studio tracks (1-4,7,8) and the best the live stuff (Rondo / She Belongs To Be) led my Emersons excellent Hammond playing with the excellent rhythm section, unfortunately let down by Brian Davisons weak vocals..but worth it for the live tracks...
