I used to have Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres on vinyl, and decided to buy this compilation CD recently, not sure whether I would still enjoy their music. Well, the first CD is excellent! It features tracks from their debut through to Permanent Waves, and most have stood the test of time. I particularly enjoyed:
Fly By Night, the nearest they got to a simple 3 minute single:
Bastille Day, their hard-rocking ode to the French Revolution!
Farewell to Kings, with a beautiful acoustic intro and an absolutely riveting guitar solo in the middle!
In fact Alex Lifeson's guitar work is consistently brilliant: there is no better example of this than the instrumental from Hemispheres, La Villa Strangiato, which held my attention for its (approx) 8 minute duration for this reason.
Another distinguishing characteristic is the high standard of Neil Peart's percussion: he is hardly your regular hard rock drummer: just listen to the range of percussion on The Trees!
Which brings me to Geddy Lee, a good bassist but you either love or hate his falsetto vocals. On the first few tracks he sounds strained a lot of the time (which I do not mind myself), however from 2112 onwards his vocals are smoother and fit in perfectly with the music. I write this for the benefit of those who are less familiar with the band.
By the time of Permanent Waves, Rush had developed a relatively sophisticated sound, with some strong keyboard work and interesting chord structures, and still the outstanding guitar: Free Will is a good example of this, and is in my view their greatest 5 minutes of music (or is it 6?). The UK hit single Spirit Of Radio stands up well (as does the earlier Closer To The Heart).

Rush for Everthing Rush
Rush - Fantastic, nothing more to say. Have them all and love them all, at least until Geddy got his new teeth. Musically they continue to amaze and get better and better.

Any devotee will know why this compilation gets the 5 star treatment. For the uninitiated there is ample proof of why the band has a cult following and why they are vastly underrated by the mainstream critical elite.
This compilation charts their early works through until the end of the 80's - but it does not include their latter albums ,which mark a return to a heavier guitar driven sound.
As with any - yes any , Rush offering the music is off the highest integrity. The drum ,bass and guitar combos of Peart , Lee and Lifeson ( apart from disc 1 tracks 1 & 2 ) combine with their own songwriting skills to bring an edgy , unique and ultimately rewarding collection of both classic and progressive rock.
There are weaknesses to be found ( The Big Money , Mystic Rhythms ) but they are few and far between.
All in all an essential collectors item for the fan and a satisfying experience for the novice.
Like Rush this is five of the best.

Just what I wanted. Took me back nearly 40 years. Just enough Rush to make the CD collection complete. I recommend this one.

I was looking for more of Rush's live stuff. To me LIVE is the only way to hear this band. Utterly superb.
