WMA, MP3 - HD200 is the one for me..., 8 Dec 2004
This review is from: mpio - HD200 - 5GB MP3 Player / FM Radio / Voice Recorder (Electronics)
I was almost set on getting another white or multicoloured (smaller) player before I stumbled across the HD200, but I am glad I did a little bit more searching.
I had planned on transferring all my files from my PC to the other brand of 'white' player until someone mentioned to me that it wouldn't playback WMA files, too which I said what's a WMA file?
Now if like me you happily use Windows Media Player to encode your CD's happy in the thought that you are getting MP3 files, then think again. In fact you get WMA files which are claimed to be Microsoft's equivalent to MP3's, I didn't know there was a difference I have to say!
Anyway fortunately someone did mention this and also said that the other 'white and multicoloured' players would not play the files. On checking I found this to be true. Also on further digging I found that if I did decide to download 'legal' tracks in the future my choice of where to buy from was going to be severely limited by this.
So with this new information I looked for players that would play both MP3 and WMA files and found a number of products, but the HD200 stood out.
Now with 5GB of storage that's 25% more than the leading equivalent and I also get an easy unit to copy my tracks onto rather than using another piece of software.
There is also a utility program that will scan the player and break all the files into Genre, Album, Artist etc, to help in the searching for my music. Although I have to admit I like to use the Directory option as this is how I see my files on my PC.
On top of the better storage the HD also has a radio, voice recorder and direct encoding although I am still a little green behind the ears on how I would use that when I have a PC and a CD Drive. I don't have any what 'old people' call vinyl so I guess it's not something I need to worry about too much.
One thing that is noticeable though is that I am only achieving around 10 hours worth of playback, but I don't suppose I am working under the claimed lab test requirements that a lot of these manufacturers work under.
Ah well must go my little friend is serenading me again...Hope this helps!

Great Sound And Features, 30 Dec 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: mpio - HD200 - 5GB MP3 Player / FM Radio / Voice Recorder (Electronics)
I think the last review was a bit harsh. The sound quality is excellent and far better than the iPod. There are a whole number of different sound settings to play with, like WOW and 'SRS' setting (sound retrieval system) which brings an immediacy in sound. Also there's TruBass. The guy who wrote the previous review said you should get new headphones which is totally wrong because there designed to capture these various settings, I recommend he invest in some cotton buds to clear his ears out.
Also you get extra features like a voice recorder and an excellent radio which has a visual picture display of the frequency.
People who are used to a see saw type navigation won't have a problem with using this. When you put the latest firmware upgrades on it works like a treat.

HD200 How I wish I could read Korean!, 8 Sep 2005
This review is from: mpio - HD200 - 5GB MP3 Player / FM Radio / Voice Recorder (Electronics)
HD200 is technically excellent, sound quality is important for me as most of the music I listen to is Classical and so tracks tend to be long. With nearly 700 "tracks", some of which are one hour long, I still have 1.2 GB of free space! Reception in FM mode (even Radio3) is excellent as is direct encoding from CDs or tapes.
The drawbacks: 1) a poorly written manual in English and other European languages, hence the title of this review, perhaps it makes more sense in Korean. 2)Support from its website in the Netherlands, USa and Korea was as enigmatically oriental as its manual.
It plays WMA/MP3 and other types of files unlike the ubiquitious Apple product that has no radio, plays no WMA and does not record. In spite of all this it was a worthwhile acquisiton, I presume its bigger brother with 20GB capacity is easier to navigate and comes with better instructions. I also experienced like other reviewers that from time to time it locks and needs to be reset.
Battery life is about 8 to 9 hours so it's OK for long plane trips
