Grant Green and Ike Quebec were a potent team. They recorded two excellent sessions together. One was released under Quebec's name as 'Blue And Sentimental' and the other is this album. Supported by the great combination of Sonny Clark on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums, Green and Quebec perform great versions of such tunes as 'If I Should Lose You' and 'Someday My Prince Will Come'.

Guitar and saxophone is always a winning combination and when the players are as distinctive as these two, it is not surprising that the result is such an enjoyable record.

Another fine album from Grant Green and Ike Quebec, but to my mind not quite as good as the album recorded a few months earlier (1961) and released with Quebec as the leader under the title "Blue and Sentimental". This time the pair are supported by pianist Sonny Clark, bassman Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes (both of whom were current members of the finest Cannonball Adderley quintet). Certainly everyone plays well (there are eight tunes, only one "original" and the title track "Born To Be Blue" appears twice) but I don't think that Quebec plays as well as on "B and S" (perhaps because of failing health? This is one of his last recordings before succumbing to lung cancer at an early age). Quebec is regarded as a member of the Hawkins - Webster school and certainly can produce a beautiful tone, as he does on Grant Green's "Outer Space". I am not averse to "quotes" when improvising but on "Back In Your Own Backyard" i thought the tune had changed to Ellington's "What Am I Here For?"!
Grant Green came to recording late (aged thirty) but certainly made up for the delay by becoming one of Blue Note's most prolific artistes. He is considered a disciple of Charlie Christian and is certainly extremely competent both as a guitarist and improviser.
There is solid if unremarkable support from Sonny Clark, and Jones and Hayes produce a reliable and steady groove.
Not without its merits I nevertheless consider that this album overall misses the top grade.
