Hi My son has been playing WOW for free on the battlenet site and now wishes to buy Mists of Pandaria so he can get to higher levels. Does he need to buy previous discs first? Can he play the discs without a monthly subscription fee?

Hi, Unfortunately you do need to own all the previous Expansions to upgrade to Mists of Pandaria. There is a monthly Fee to play WoW also. I haven't played WoW for a good year or so, so my pricing might be a bit off, but it was like £8.99pm and about £25 for 3months?

Cheapest option is the 6 month subscription (at around £46 or so, if I recall from Cataclysm - no idea if it's changed since then but I doubt it). However, be warned: as soon as your son starts playing properly, you'll never see him again. This game is stupidly addictive and sucks time like a black hole.
